Wine tasting notes

One of the top Cru vineyards of Barolo, aged in 40 percent new oak barriques. A totally different profile of wine to Bricco Viole less fruity, perfumed and primary, more brooding and beguiling but seductive nonetheless. This demonstrates great complexity, notes of clove spice, cocoa, undergrowth, truffle and oregano couple with incisive, bright red cherry fruit with warming suggestions of sloe, this is not an immediate wine, it is serious, nuanced Barolo that will take time to show its truly wonderful colours.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2011) - 94 pts

June 2016. Reviewer : Monica Larner - The 2011 Barolo Brunate presents an extra layer of darkness, richness and aromatic intensity that sets it apart from Mario Marengo's other wines. A portion of this vineyard site was previously rented to Elio Altare, but that contract has expired and the fruit is now being used to increase production of this beautiful wine. This wine is busting with a clean and polished persona, and a sheer sense of energy and fruitiness. It should stand up to long cellar-aging.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2011) - 93 pts

Mar 15 - The 2011 Barolo Brunate is dark, powerful and muscular in style, quite a contrast to the decidedly more feminine Bricco Viole. Some of the personality of Brunate appears to be covered by the richness of the vintage, yet there is plenty to like here as well. Dark plum, menthol, leather and cedar are some of the notes that wrap around the pliant, inviting finish. This is another 2011 that will drink well right out of the gate. -- Antonio Galloni

JancisRobinson.com (2011) - 17+ pts

Tasted Mar 2015 - Just mid ruby with orange-tinged rim. Very backward yet fine and with a brooding richness to it. Top notes of tea leaves. Very tightly woven palate with lively acidity and muscular tannins demanding all the attention for the moment. Complex, but holding back on the finish. Elegant palate weight. Very embryonic, something for the future. (WS)

Wine Spectator (2011) - 93 pts

Round and fruity, showing cherry, raspberry, tobacco and briar flavors. Densely structured and taut, yet balanced in an athletic way, with a long, juicy finish. Best from 2019 through 2033

James Suckling (2011) - 93 pts

A wonderful purity of fruit here with dark berry, plum skin and hints of lemons. Full body, silky tannins and a long and flavorful finish. Shows wonderful potential indeed. Better in 2019.
