Wine tasting notes

Elegance, freshness and finesse is key, still remaining concentrated and age able. Flavours of fresh cherries, blackcurrant and potpourri reveals itself first, with subtleties of dried herbs and spice lending complexity. The palate follows through with fruit concentration, intricate and dense structure, while hints of savoury and spice gives dimensions. The lingering taste of blueberries, is a great reminder of the wines complexity.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2015) - 93 pts

The 2015 Liberte is 100% Pinotage and comes from gravelly soils, which according to winemaker Bruwer Raats helps to control vine growth. Matured in 500-liter barrels (10% new), it has a generous bouquet with beautifully defined cranberry, fynbos and rooibos aromas—very feminine. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline entry, a little grainy in texture with good backbone and a slightly savory finish. This is a Pinotage exemplar.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2016) - 92 pts

The 2016 Liberté Pinotage was picked a little earlier than its peers with a small proportion of whole clusters, and aged for 18 months in used French oak. It really has a wonderful bouquet, one of the best Pinotage aromatics I came across in my tastings, featuring blackberry, briar, iris and crushed stone aromas that convey a sense of coolness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannin, fresh marine-influenced black fruit and a vibrant, nicely poised, spice-tinged finish. This is one of the best Pinotages you will find.

James Suckling (2016) - 91 pts

A fresh and fruity red, showing citrus rind, lavender, freshly cut herbs, orange rind, raspberries and slate. Medium body, firm and grainy tannins and a minerally finish. A different take on pinotage. Drink now.

Jamie Goode (2014) - 93 pts

This is Pinotage from an ocean-facing granite-soiled vineyard in the Bottelary Hills. Lovely floral black cherry and plum fruit nose. Fresh, elegant red cherry and plum palate with nice grip and real elegance. So fine and expressive with raspberries and cherries.

Platter's South African Wine Guide (2014) - 4 stars

Fragrant aromas of 2014 from old vines most appealing, with more red than black fruit character. Only older oak used, to preserve purity & a rare delicacy in the world of pinotage.

Tim Atkin (2016) - 91 pts

An attempt to strip Pinotage back to its component parts (Pinot Noir and Cinsaut), this partially whole bunch-fermented example is all about delicacy, focus and fragrance, with savoury tannins and a smidgeon of oak. 2017-21
