Wine tasting notes

Intense and lifted aromas of cigar box, tobacco leaf, spices, cedar and vanilla, combined with fresh dark berries and ripe plums. A rich, full and round palate of great balance, displaying rich Douro berry fruit characters and a delicious savoury edge, with integrated tannins and a great length of finish.

Winery information

Quinta do Crasto

Situated on an outcrop of rock on the north bank of the river Douro, half-way between Regua and Pinhao, Quinta do Crasto is arguably the finest estate for the production of red wine in Portugal. There is great strength in depth throughout, from the Douro Red which regularly wins accolades for its exceptional value-for-money, up to the iconic single vineyard wines from century-old vines. Everything is hand harvested from vineyards owned by the Roquette family, many over 70yrs of age and plenty in their 100?s, the whole bunches are transported in small 20kg crates to the Quinta and everything is also hand-sorted. The winemaking philosophy is to use pure ripe fruit from traditional Douro varieties, overlaid with barrique ageing where appropriate, and extremely smooth tannins. In their quest to be able to pick only the healthiest and ripest grapes the Roquette family have invested in a new vineyard in the upper (or superior) Douro. This enterprise has its roots in tradition; the indigenous, un-irrigated vines are planted in terraces on the steeply sloped sides of the Douro River and hand harvested, but with a modern approach; each small block that has been carved out of the hillside has been planted with a single variety according to its aspect, exposure and soil type. This encapsulates the philosophy and vision for Quinta Do Crasto which has been the driving force behind International acclaim, and the recognition that Quinta Do Crasto has been integral in building the position for high quality table wines from the Douro.

Vinification notes

The grapes were then completely destemmed and slightly crushed. After this, the must was transferred to temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Once the alcoholic fermentation was completed, the grape were gently pressed using hydraulic presses. 85% matured in French oak barrels and 15% in American oak for about 16 months.
