Wine tasting notes

Intense ruby-red in colour, offeringrs fruity notes of blackberries together with floral notes of violets, spices and tobacco. Full-bodied on the palate, with minerality and good acidity that are well-balanced with smooth tannins. The long finish reflects the wine's fruity perfumes.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2011) - 91 pts

Oct 2015 0 Monica Larner - Broad aromas of cherry fruit, blackberry preserves and dark chocolate give the 2011 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano a heavy feel and a large frame. Rather than performing in a direct and vertical manner, this wine is thick, long and horizontal in approach. You get the same impression in the mouth, where the tannins add strength and power with a good showing of depth and complexity.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2013) - 93+ pts

The 2013 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano hits the palate with serious intensity and overall depth. Succulent red cherry, plum, smoke, licorice, herb, tobacco and incense meld together in a pliant, highly expressive Vino Nobile that hits all the right notes. Firm tannins and bright acidity suggest the 2013 will drink well for a number of years. The 2013 is a total knock-out. -- Antonio Galloni

JancisRobinson.com (2013) - 17 pts

Sept 2016 - Just released. Light garnet. Beautifully fragrant. Silky, elegant and still has a grip to the tannins but it is more elegant than the 2012, more ready, it seems. (JH)

Wine Spectator (2013) - 90 pts

Sept 2016 - A bright, juicy red, boasting cherry, spice, earth and tobacco flavors. Balanced and elegant, yet with grip on the moderately long finish. Drink now through 2020.

Wine Enthusiast (2015) - 90 pts

Mature plum, chopped herb and a whiff of truffle lead the nose. The aromas carry over to the ripe palate along with black cherry and a hint of star anise encased in supple tannins.

Decanter (2015) - 86 pts

Another Montepulciano estate in the process of organic certification, Tenuta Valdipiatta has worked with Bordeaux oenologist Eric Boissenot since 2010. Barrel ageing has been reduced from 24 to 18 months, and barriques replaced with larger formats. A touch of Canaiolo Nero is included as a field blend. At present, the 2015 is backward with wood dominating the palate. It comes across as unrelentingly drying and slightly green, despite the obvious ripeness of fruit.
