Wine tasting notes

Powerfully structured, this is an austere, warm, amply flavoured wine with a deep ruby to brick-red colour and a richly complex, dry, full and soft palate. A muscular, full-bodied wine with great richness.

Food matching

Brunello di Montalcino is the King of Tuscan wines. It should accompany strongly flavoured meats and game.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2013) - 93 pts

The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino exhibits a nicely balanced presentation with dark fruit layers that are embellished by well-managed oak spice and savory smoke. This vintage is particularly elegant and tight, with streamlined intensity that builds slowly in the glass as the wine takes on more volume and general breathing space. The finish is long, silky and should well endure the test of time.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2013) - 92+ pts

Medium red with a hint of amber at the rim. Deep, perfumed nose of red cherry, cedar and violet. Enters juicy and round, displaying outstanding sweetness to the red fruit flavors, then more austere, with a noteworthy tannic spine providing backbone but also suppressing the fruit somewhat on the long, clean, flinty back end. This will really benefit from a good five or six years of cellaring – at least.

JancisRobinson.com (2013) - 17+ pts

Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Serious, brooding and concentrated nose with hints of candied fruit. Bags of mouth-filling fruit on the palate. Intense, long and very ripe but with great acidity giving it lift. Very long and with delicious, chewy tannins. (WS)

Wine Spectator (2013) - 92 pts

A supple texture and round profile wraps around the cherry, leather and spice flavors here. Firms up, turning more chewy by the finish, exhibiting a salty, minerally finish. Best from 2021 through 2035.

James Suckling (2013) - 91 pts

Quite classically styled with leather and cedary aromas alongside dried cherries. The palate has bright acidity and poached red-cherry flavors hold long, smooth and even. You can drink now or hold for a more savory style and try around 2021.

Wine Enthusiast (2013) - 91 pts

Underbrush, dark kitchen spice and woodland berry aromas lead the nose. The solid palate offers Marasca cherry, prune and ground clove alongside firm tannins. Drink 2021–2028.
