Wine tasting notes

Silvery lemon yellow in the glass. Fresh and grassy perfumes lead to a lively, lifted palate with a mineral undertone. This Meriggio shows the characteristic high quality of all the Fontodi wines and finishes on a long, elegant note.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2014) - 90 pts

Oct 2015 - Monica Larner - The 2014 Meriggio is a pure expression of Sauvignon Blanc from the heart of the Chianti Classico wine appellation. First made in 1984, Meriggio had other white grapes in the blend such as Pinot Bianco and Traminer. With time, the wine evolved into mono-variety expression with whole cluster pressing followed by partial oak fermentation for extra creaminess. The wine sees lees contact in steel tanks and the general winemaking philosophy calls for as little contact with oxygen as possible. This vintage shows higher freshness and acidity, and a bouquet that is beautifully redolent of white flower and passion fruit.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2016) - 89 pts

The 2016 Meriggio, 100% Sauvignon, is bright, floral and varietally expressive, all qualities that are best enjoyed over the near term. Proprietor Giovanni Manetti aged the 2016 mostly in steel, with about 15% new oak and 10% amphora to round things out.

JancisRobinson.com (2015) - 17.5 pts

Tasted Sept 2016 - Fragrant and herbally scented citrus with the richness of lees and the freshness of the variety. Herbal but has notes of orange, too. Smoky, long, sophisticated finish. One of the best European Sauvignon Blancs I have tasted in a long time. (JH)
