Wine tasting notes

Taking it’s name from the fluted basalt boulders that solemnly surround our volcanic hilltop vineyards, Gravestone is bequeathed upon the finest blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon we are blessed with each vintage. Classic Sémillon characters of chalk dust and fresh herbs with complex fennel bulb characters from the wild Sauvignon. The palate is focused and structured with tense acidity and ripe fruit tannins giving persistence and clarity.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2013) - 89+ pts

Jan 2015. Reviewer : Lisa Perrotti Brown - Produced from 70% tank fermented Sauvignon Blanc and 30% Semillon fermented and aged in old oak puncheons, the 2013 Gravestone has a nose is redolent of grapefruit, lemon curd and ripe apples with hints of cedar and freshly chopped herbs. Medium-bodied, it offers tons of crisp, citrusy flavor, with apparent but not aggressive oak and a long finish. It should age reasonably well.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2013) - 89 pts

May 2016 - Pale, bright yellow. Pungent scents of crystallized lemon peel and grapefruit. Juicy, intense flavors of white peach, guava, green melon and quinine plus a grassy nuance, with a hint of phenolic bitterness that McTavish says is intentional. A thick, ripe, concentrated Sauvignon Blanc with enticing sweetness of fruit (but technically dry) and very good length. Comes across as riper and sweeter--more candied--than the typical Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc but has lively appley acidity. Two thousand thirteen was a very concentrated vintage, with production of just one ton an acre, according to McTavish, who noted that yields on Waiheke Island are typically low due to sea breezes during the flowering.

Tasted Feb 2016 - Very aromatic grassy nose plus a sweet oak note. Bold, contrasting. (RH)

James Suckling (2013) - 93 pts

A terrific take on the Bordeaux blanc style with a nicely judged oak component adding nutty savory notes to the bright pure citrus and stone fruit aromas. The palate's smooth and supple, really even and juicy, with terrific composure. Lemon and nectarine flavors run long; handy balance.

Wine Front (2013) - 92 pts

Struck match and sulphides, rockmelon, butter, citrus. Burst of flavour, intense acidity and flavour of lime, butter and cumquats. Some warmth showing, perhaps. Tight acidity and a flinty finish of very good length. Plenty packed into its neat frame.
