Found in a beautiful location on the southern face of the Hog’s Back between Farnham and Guildford, Greyfriars Vineyard is very much a family affair. Mike and Hilary Wagstaff took over the 25 year old vineyard in 2010 and have extended it from the original one and a half acre site to over 40 acres. Ably assisted by their brother-in-law David, the Vineyard Manager, they produce award-winning English sparkling wines.
Despite only releasing their first wine in 2013, Greyfriars has already received several awards at an international level, including two gold medals in the 2018 International Wine and Spirits Competition for their Blanc de Blancs 2013 and Sparkling Rosé Reserve 2014.
At Greyfriars, the vines are predominantly the three classical Champagne grape varieties; Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Blessed with geological and soil conditions similar to France’s Champagne region - Greyfriars boasts a clay/loam topsoil over several hundred feet of wonderful free draining Cretaceous chalk – the vineyard is able to produce English sparkling wines of impeccable quality. Since the family took over the vineyard, they have added a state-of-the-art winery and a chalk cave with space for storing and ageing quarter of a million bottles of wine.
