Wine tasting notes

Our Far Coast Vineyard is a cool site surrounded by redwood forests and located almost two hours north of the Russian River on a Sonoma Coast mountain ridge. It is an area that some call the ‘True Sonoma Coast.’ Others would simply describe the distant vineyard site as ‘the middle of nowhere.’ Far Coast Vineyard sits just south of the town of Annapolis at 800-1000 feet above sea level. The soils at this ridge-top site are well-drained Goldridge sandy loam, which helps to intensify the sense of minerality and focus in the wines produced from this vineyard. The 2013 vintage was another ideal vintage on the Sonoma Coast that produced very concentrated wines. This wine was produced from a block planted to Clones 15 and 809. This vintage of the Far Coast Vineyard Chardonnay exhibits aromas of orange zest, yellow apple, dried fruits and spice. The flavors lead with tangerine, mandarin orange and quince, followed by a long textural finish of minerals and gravel.

Expert Reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2012)95 to 97 pts

Dec 2013 - Robert Parker - The 2012 Chardonnay Far Coast Vineyard comes from a site located on a mountain ridge north of Fort Ross. Like its siblings, it was fermented with indigenous yeasts, and bottled unfined and unfiltered after spending 15 months in one-third new oak. It’s alcohol is among the lowest at 14.1%. A blockbuster Chardonnay, it boasts intense aromas of mangoes, Mandarin oranges, pineapples and wet rocks along with noticeable minerality, full body, and stunning purity as well as symmetry. This is another great Chardonnay from proprietor Don Hartford and his winemaking team. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2012)92 to 94 pts

The 2012 Chardonnay Far Coast Vineyard is one of the most nuanced, transparent and weightless Chardonnays in this range. Lemon, slate, white flowers and crushed rocks meld together in a pointed, nuanced Chardonnay endowed with terrific energy and pure mineral drive. Bright saline notes support the finish. This is a terrific showing from Hartford. -- Antonio Galloni

The vineyard is in the far northwestern, mountainous part of the county, on the true Sonoma Coast. You can taste the cold, foggy nights in the mouthwatering acidity, and the warm, sunny days in the ripe oranges, tropical fruits and limes. As always, this Hartford Court Chardonnay brims with balanced elegance. It's ready to drink now.
