Wine tasting notes

The 2012 vintage was another beautiful growing season that produced very concentrated wines in the Green Valley of Russian River Valley. The Fog Dance Vineyard Chardonnay is sourced from our estate-owned, organically farmed vineyard located in the Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA. This stunningly beautiful vineyard was planted in 1998 using Dijon Chardonnay clone 96 and ENTAV 809 and is planted upon the locally famous Goldridge fine sandy loam soil (sometimes referred to as ‘moon dust’ due to its ultra-fine and almost ‘fluffy’ texture). The 2012 Fog Dance Vineyard Chardonnay bottling is named for the dance performed by the Pacific fog, driing through the vineyards and back again to the sea each day. This wine reflects its cool Green Valley terroir, showing fresh fruit brightness and amazing transparency along with a refined and mineral-driven texture. It is one of our small production single vineyard designated wines. The 2012 Fog Dance displays bright aromas of lemon and lime oil, tangerine and orange blossom. The flavors of mandarin orange, green apple and preserved lemon meld together with a mineral-driven finish, reflecting its cool Green Valley terroir.

Dec 2013 - Robert Parker - The 2012 Chardonnay Fog Dance Vineyard is from a hillside location in Green Valley that experiences the frequent fogs that roll in off the ocean. It exhibits abundant notes of Mandarin oranges and citrus oil intermixed with a hint of smoke (one-third new French oak is utilized), and a full-bodied, rich, crisp, layered mouthfeel with great elegance as well as purity. It possesses one of the highest alcohol levels of Hartford Court’s Chardonnays at 14.7%.

Light yellow. Heady aromas of mineral-accented citrus and orchard fruits, fig, iodine and smoky lees, with a sexy floral quality emerging with air. Offers palate-staining pear and Meyer lemon flavors complemented by deeper notes of honey and sweet butter. Powerful yet lithe and precise, finishing with excellent cling and an echo of iodine. -- Stephen Tanzer

This is a huge, gigantic Chardonnay. It's an atomic blast of tropical fruits, apricots, peaches, pears, oranges and zesty limes, along with plenty of toasty, caramelized oak. This massive richness is fortunately balanced by wonderful acidity and even a streak of minerality, like a lick of chalk and granite.
