Jim Barry

The late Jim Barry was a pioneer of the Australian wine industry – a true legend. He originally wanted to pursue a career in medicine but as his Latin grades were not good enough for admission, he had to think about a career change, and he chose wine! Graduating with the 17th Degree in Oenology in 1947 from the famous Roseworthy Agricultural College, Jim established his winery in the Clare Valley in 1959, but also worked as the winemaker for the Clarevale Cooperative for 22 years, and in 1969 established Taylors Wines for the Taylor family. Jim went on to shape the wine region, instrumental in making the valley a benchmark in the world of Riesling, and dedicating his life to the wine industry. He was the first qualified winemaker to work in South Australia's Clare Valley and, with his wife Nancy, built a successful business. Today that business is headed up by Jim' second son Pete, who became the Managing Director in 1985, and Pete's sons Tom and Sam, and daughter Olivia all work in the business as winemaker, Commercial manager and Brand manager respectively. Pete graduated from Roseworthy in 1983, and Tom in 2009, making Jim Barry the first family owned winery in Australia to have three generations of graduates from this course. They own 17 different vineyards in the Clare Valley covering 320 hectares, and two vineyards in Coonawarra covering another 35 hectares. The resulting mosaic of soils and climates allows them to craft a unique portfolio. As well as producing numerous award-winning wines, Jim Barry also make some of Australia’s most iconic wines – the McRae Wood Shiraz, produced from a roughly 28 hectare site purchased in 1964 from Duncan McRae Wood. Then there is the legendary Armagh Shiraz, produced from a 3.3 hectare vineyard that Jim planted in 1968. It takes its name from the lush, rolling hills that reminded early Irish settlers arriving in 1849 so much of their Ulster homeland, that they bestowed the name Armagh on the area. And for white wine lovers, there are their yardstick Rieslings – in the Clare Valley Wine Show their Rieslings garnered six gold medals – a feat that has never happened before! Jim Barry - three generations of family winemakers, celebrated their 60th birthday by winning the prestigious 2020 Halliday Wine Companion Winery of the Year, with 12 of their wines receiving a score of 95 plus points. Exceptional wines from an exceptional winery!
