Wine tasting notes

Dark crimson-purple in colour; the nose shows dried bouquet garni herbs and earthy-hummus, with intense raspberry and plum fruits evolving into black cherry kirsch, smoky bacon fat into saddle leather. The wine has a silky and ample texture, flinty minerality, white pepper and star anise spice and long, focused tannins on the complex, well-balanced palate.

Winery information

Leogate Estate Wines

Leogate Estate is a sustainable estate at the foot of the Brokenback Range in Australia’s oldest wine producing region, the Hunter Valley.

First planted in the late 1960’s by “one of the founding fathers of the modern Australian wine industry”, Len Evans AO OBE, current custodians Bill and Vicki Widin bought the original 50-hectare Brokenback Vineyard in 2008. The Widins and Senior Winemaker, Mark Woods, have presided over international accolades including the IWC Trophy for Best New Wine, wines poured on Qantas First and Business class flights over the past five years, and various medals have been awarded on the national wine show circuit for their prestigious wines. James Halliday’s 2020 Australian Wine Companion awarded Leogate Estate Wines a red 5-star rating for the ninth consecutive year.

The current vineyard has 50 hectares under vine, comprising Chardonnay (18.1ha), and Semillon (3.9ha) on the flat gravelled soils and Shiraz (28ha) on the eastern and western-facing slopes of the adjacent rise as well as Verdelho (2.5ha) and Tempranillo (1ha) which were planted in 2009.

Expert reviews

James Halliday (2014) - 95 pts

From west-facing vines on a small plot of the Brokenback Vineyard planted in the early '70s. Dark crimson-purple, beautifully deep and intensely bright; it has a layered and spicy bouquet with hints of dried herbs setting it apart from the other '14 Shirazs, it is firmer and the tannins more present, the finish no less intense and long.

Vinification notes

This shiraz was handpicked and fermented on skins in open-top stainless-steel fermenters. A combination of hand plunging and pump over techniques was used during the fermentation resulting in a wine that is robust and persuasive but with an elegant, linear tannin shape. The wine was then pressed off the skin and matured for 15-months in new, French one and two-year-old 300 L hogshead barrels.
