Marimar Estate

As a fourth generation member of the mighty Catalan Torres wine dynasty, whose wine roots can be traced back to the 17th century, and sister of Miquel Torres, who is president of Bodegas Torres, Marimar Torres was certainly born with wine flowing through her veins. She has been in the wine business all her life and Marimar Estate is her brainchild. Prior to this, Marimar had travelled extensively as the company's Export Director promoting the Torres portfolio of wines, first in Spain, then later on in America, and in 1975 California became her home. She was no stranger to the US, having studied oenology and viticulture at UC Davis. Marimar began her project searching for a site to plant a vineyard, and found it near Sebastopol in the Green Valley sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County. In 1986 she began planting what she would call the Don Miguel Vineyard, named in honour of her late father. This cool micro-climate site is just 10 miles from the Pacific ocean, which has a cooling influence on the vineyards, and is perfect is for the cultivation of premium Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Marimar's first wine was a 1989 barrel-fermented Chardonnay, released in 1991 to great acclaim. A 1992 Pinot Noir followed, released in 1994. The winery was built in 1992 and is 100% solar powered. Today grapes are sourced from two estate vineyard sites. The Don Miguel Vineyard is planted with 30 hectares of Chardonnay and 30 hectares of Pinot Noir, with some additional Syrah, Tempranillo and Albariño. The Doña Margarita Vineyard in the Russian River Coast AVA, and named in tribute to her late mother, is planted solely with Pinot Noir. Marimar farms organically and biodynamically, and employs European viticulture methods adapted to Californian conditions. Extensive research has been done on clonal selection, and a collection of both Californian and Burgundian clones have been chosen to enhance the characteristics of the fruit for each wine. Marimar's daughter Christina joined the estate as Director of Sales and Marketing in 2020. The Torres family business has been passed down from father to son for five generations, but this is the first time it will passed from mother to daughter. These are uniquely Californian wines, but reflect three centuries of Catalan expertise.
