Mas la Mola

The Mas la Mola estate has been owned by the Ferrando family since 1860. They are located in Poboleda in the north-west of Priorat in the province of Tarragona in Catalonia. 7 hectares of low-yielding ancient Garnaxa (Grenache) and Carineña (Carignan), which are between 35 and 70 years old, and old vine Macabeo and Garnaxa Blanco (White Grenache) are under vine on the unique licorella (slate) soils of Priorat, at between 350 and 450 meters above sea level, on different parcels in the Poboleda area. Jordi Masdeu, a young Spaniard who spent time working in London in the wine trade, and Alessandro Marchesan, a former Roka/Zuma group sommelier, are in charge of the viticulture and wine-making. The diminutive winery is housed in a lovely old restored and modernised 18th century building with stone vaults and group sommelier, are in charge of the viticulture and wine-making. The diminutive winery is housed in a lovely old restored and modernised 18th century building with stone vaults and brick walls and, in the lower floor where the wines age, an original old wine press can be viewed. The grapes are hand-picked and each individual parcel is vinified separately; the different micro-climates, aspects and vine ages of the different plots add complexities to the final blends. New and second fill French oak are used for aging. This boutique winery crafts intense, high quality wines from this special corner of Spain which express all the character of Priorat.
