Wine tasting notes

Our 2013 red blend is composed of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Syrah. These grapes grown in the oldest planted vineyards in Rosario, located on slopes with excellent sun exposure. The predominant soils are of granitic origin, low fertility and very good drainage. The vineyards selected for this blend are cultivated according to biodynamic principles, being very specific for each grape variety; this allows the fruit to reach their ideal maturity and concentration. This wine shows deep bright red color and violet hues. The nose displays very expressive aromas of red fruit, with chocolate and spices. The mouth reveals a round full mid palate with polished tannins. Each lot brings a unique layer of flavor and additional complexity to the final wine: Cabernet Franc provides tannin structure, Malbec the flowery notes and berry flavors; Syrah delivers spiciness, damp earth and violet aromas. The well integrated oak offers aromas of vanilla and chocolate, culminating in a long, elegant and highly complex finish.

The Matetic family arrived in Chile some 100 years ago and acquired large haciendas in the southern tip of the country which they used for sheep and dairy farming. It was in 1999 that the family bought the estate in the San Antonio Valley and turned their hand to winemaking. Dec 2015 - Luis Gutierrez - The good climate blend 2013 Winemaker's Blend Corralillo is Syrah-based and then there is some 33% Malbec and 18% Cabernet Franc from their El Rosario vineyard, where they have the older plantings, plus a pinch of Petit Verdot. The grapes are destemmed and crushed and put in one open-top tank by gravity. There is a seven-day cold soak and then fermentation starts. Malolactic is in barrels where the wine matured for 16 months. The blend is done at the end, before bottling. They look for hillside vineyards as they get the expression of Syrah with more red fruit and less black olives, fresher, which goes better with the floral aromas of Malbec, and the chocolate and tobacco notes of Cabernet Franc. The nose is very showy, floral, aromatic, intense and clean with integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and the freshness of place, as well as the 2013 growing conditions. Lively and polished. Harmonious blend, savoury and yet with good ripeness. Very competent if rather commercial wine. Just the merest hint of something animal. Good friendly grip.

Roasted gamy aromas are spicy and common for cool-climate Syrah, which makes up 60% of this wine along with Malbec and Cabernet Franc. A full and balanced palate is where it needs to be, while gamy spicy black-fruit flavors are mildly herbal and finish with noticeable oak.

Vinification Notes

All three grape varieties underwent a seven-day cold soak before fermentation. Then, a set of specific oenological techniques has been applied to each wine, in order to enhance their different characteristics. The different lots were aged for 15 months in French oak barrels from different coopers, forests and toast levels. Finally, the selected varietal wines are blended in precise proportions, which allow us to obtain a complex and balanced wine that express the vintage characteristics, such as climate and specific terroirs.
