Wine tasting notes

The wine has a very pale yellow color, with light green hues. The nose is complex and delicate, with aromas of citrus and tropical fruit such as mango, papaya and lime peel with herbal notes. The palate displays concentrated fruit flavors, a fresh and salty acidity that finishes with a lingering crisp minerality.

Matetic Vineyards

The Matetic family arrived in Chile some 100 years ago and acquired large haciendas in the southern tip of the country which they used for sheep and dairy farming. The almost transparent 2016 EQ Coastal Sauvignon Blanc from Casablanca was produced with grapes grown at 12 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean on decomposed granite and mica soils. It fermented in stainless steel, barriques and concrete amphorae where it's kept with lees for four months, which represents the essence of what Matetic Sauvignon Blanc is about: citric, salty, with a balanced palate and good persistence. It's subtle and elegant, a restrained style of Sauvignon, more about the place (sea breeze, granite) than the variety. Beautifully textured, in the style of a Sancerre, with no influence from the oak, with a notable absence of herbal notes, as they avoided the clones that lend those aromas. Very food friendly, this wine is about the palate rather than the nose. Awesome value. This was started in 2001, but since 2007 it has been fine-tuned to a more elegant style.

A fresh and minerally version, with well-knit flavors of green apple, ripe citrus and lemongrass. Crisp acidity lingers alongside hints of verbena on the finish.

Pretty density here for a sauvignon with pear and green-apple character. Crushed stones. Medium body, bright acidity and a fruity finish. Screw cap. Drink now.

Fresh citrus and green-apple aromas lead to a healthy palate with just enough bracing acidity. Flavors of tangerine, passion fruit and grapefruit are bold and typical of Casablanca SB, while this tastes of lime, green herbs and scallion on a fit finish.

Matetic makes this wine from an estate vineyard planted in 2007, in Casablanca, six miles from the sea. It's far-coast sauvignon in surround sound, powered by pear scents, candied lemon and fresh herbs. The flavors run deep, and while acidity keeps it refreshing, the wine feels soft and friendly. Pour it with sea bass sashimi.

Vinification Notes

We harvested the grapes at the end of March, looking for the optimal ripeness for each block and clonal selection. After sorting, grapes are destemmed and cold soaked for 6 to 8 hours and then pressed under inert conditions to avoid oxidation and preserve the aromas. Fermentation was held at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks. Afterwards the wine was kept on its fine lees for 4 months. A portion (18%) was fermented in egg-shaped concrete vessels and neutral oak barrels, looking to enhance the wine’s minerality, texture and mouth volume.
