Wine tasting notes

On the palate it has a velvety texture, a firm body, but soft and elegant at the same time. Thanks to the cold climate where it matures, it is a delicate and perfectly balanced wine. Upon contact with the air, the wine opens up and shows great complexity and intensity; its rounded tannins give it a good structure, balance and long lasting nature in the mouth.

Winery Information

Matetic Vineyards

The Matetic family arrived in Chile some 100 years ago and acquired large haciendas in the southern tip of the country which they used for sheep and dairy farming. It was in 1999 that the family bought the estate in the San Antonio Valley and turned their hand to winemaking. They are now one of the most revered wine producers in Chile and have been awarded a plethora of prestigious awards including Wine & Spirit’s magazine Winery of the Year award in 2014. Dec 2015 - Luis Gutierrez - More and more they see barrels as porous containers rather than source of aromas for the wines, and the 2012 Syrah EQ does not show any oak, despite its extended élevage. It is sourced from their El Rosario and Santo Tomás biodynamic vineyards in red granite, quartz, volcanic rock and cay soils from flatter vineyards. The crushed grapes are mixed with some full clusters and put through a cold soak. After a week, the temperature is let up and fermentation starts. There is a five day post fermentative maceration and then malolactic is in 225-liter French barrique where the wine matured for 18-20 months before bottling. The soils are more complex and the yields are lower; you feel the ripeness and the heat of the vintage -- this is spicier, with more black olive and tapenade aromas, a little heady. The palate is medium to full-bodied, juicy, round and balanced with ripe flavors, very fine texture and good length. It improves with air, so open in advance or let it breathe in the glass

June '15 by Josh Raynolds - Brilliant ruby. Intense aromas of cassis, blueberry, smoky minerals, licorice and violet, with a hint of vanilla slowly emerging. Lush, sweet and densely packed, with succulent herb and floral pastille notes accenting ripe black and blue fruit flavors. Finishes smooth and broad, with lingering spiciness and fine-grained, harmonious tannins.-- Josh Raynolds

Tasted Sept 2013 - Pure fruit with a lovely floral fragrance – great quality and purity. Dark fruit cake. Full without being lumbering. Not much cool climate Syrah character – yet. Worth keeping to let the fruit retreat. (RH)

May 2015 - A polished style, with lively minerality to the red plum, dark currant and dried blackberry flavors, which are long and lush-tasting. Shows a lithe creaminess midpalate, presenting a chocolate mousse?infused finish. Drink now through 2019

Aromas of spice, blackberry and walnut aromas and flavors. Full body, very fine tannins with loads of subtle and complex flavors from pure blueberry to spices and meat. Drink now. Made from biodynamic grapes.

Jammy, earthy, chocolaty blackberry aromas come with a minerally note of vitamins and grit. This is bold and lively on the palate, with black plum, brandied cherry, herb and charred-oak flavors. Burnt toast and blackened berry flavors finish woody, chocolaty and lemony.

Vinification Notes

A wine with a very deep red coloration and violet tints. On the nose it shows deep notes of black fruits and delicate floral aromas that remind the ones of violets mixed with spices like pepper, with hints of leather and chocolate. The vinification was done in open tanks with capacity for one, two and four tons, to be able to keep the sectors and clones being vinified separatelly. The grape was cold macerated for 7 days before fermenting to achieve a slow extraction of the color, flavors and aromas from the skin, then during the fermentation, the remontage and pressing techniques were combined to favor this extraction. The wine was then placed in carefully chosen French oak barrels, where the malolactic fermentation took place and where it stayed for 12 months before being bottled.
