Miguel Torres

Jaime Torres Vendrell emigrated to Cuba in 1855, where he made a fortune in the oil industry and seaborne trade. Returning to Spain a rich man, he went into business with his brother Miguel, who was a winegrower, and together they founded the Bodega that would eventually become the behemoth that Torres is today. Jamie built a 600,000 litre wine vat, the largest in the world, but during the Spanish Civil War the winery was bombarded and everything, including the gigantic wine vat, was wrecked. But in 1940 a 3rd generation member of the family, Miguel Torres Carbó, rebuilt the winery, and restarted the business bringing an end to the company’s bulk wine by selling it in labelled bottles instead. His son Miguel A. Torres joined the family business in 1962, and his innovations took Torres to new heights. He was named the most influential Spanish vine grower and the second in Europe in 2007 in the annual list published by Decanter Magazine. In 2017 received the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Institute of Masters of Wine and the Drinks Business, recognising his outstanding contribution and influence to the wine industry. Today Torres is one of Spain’s leading wine-producing families, currently 5th generation. Miguel Torres Maczassek is the Managing Director of the Torres group based in Penedès, near Barcelona in Catalonia. It is the largest winery in Spain. They have estates throughout Spain’s wine regions (Penedès, Conca de Barberà, Toro, Jumilla, Ribera del Duero, Priorat and Rioja), and also own and run the Marimar Estate in Sonoma, California, and Miguel Torres Chile in the country’s Central Valley. Torres produces a huge range of wines from both international and indigenous grape varieties. In the mid 1960’s Torres was one of the first wineries in Spain to plant Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. They have also pioneered the indigenous grapes of Catalonia, bringing some back from the brink of extinction. In 2021 Torres were recognised for the second consecutive year as The Worlds' Most Admired Wine Brand by Drinks International. The wines of Torres have distinguished personalities and exceptional style. Torres are guided by a love of and a deep respect for the soil and the environment. A unique family whose philosophy is “the more we care for the land, the better the wine”; saying “our vision is a world where we celebrate life, care for the earth and carry on our legacy”. Olé to that!
