Mitolo

The Mitolo family arrived in Australia in the 1950’s from Italy’s Abruzzo region. They started off in the market garden business, with Frank Mitolo making wine as a pastime for family and friends. However, in 1999, after a now legendary five hour discussion with winemaker Ben Glaetzer, the two men fashioned a dream of making the ultimate expression of McLaren Vale’s rich provenance of soils – writing a six word business plan on a napkin: individuality, integrity, quality, purity, elegance and power. Their first vintage was in 2000. Mitolo's grapes are of the highest quality, which they source from local growers, in particular the Loprestis family who are also of Italian heritage. In the winery they take a hands-off approach, fermenting cool to retain the purity of the fruit, and using a range of barrel coopers to generate complexity. Mitolo’s Italian heritage runs strongly through their range using Italian varietals and techniques. Business meetings are still held over Sunday lunch with traditional Italian food and of course their wine, shared with friends old and new because, for Frank Mitolo, this is what life is all about - a table served with food and wine made with passion and love. At the heart of it all is the motto that the family brought from Abruzzo – ‘forte e gentile’: strong and gentle. Mitolo’s impressive portfolio of individually handcrafted premium wines are made with passion and uncompromising commitment to quality. Mitolo is one of Australia’s most awarded wineries, receiving international acclaim, and Ben Glaetzer is an award-winning winemaker. For wines of this quality Mitolo represent great value for money.
