Wine tasting notes

The name of our second wine from the Maremma region is gleaned from the Latin phrase Per Aspera Ad Astra — “a rough road leads to the stars”. A phrase that is also true for great wines, as greatness requires a great deal of loving work and care in the vineyards. As is the case with its “older brother” Nectar Dei, Ad Astra grows on the sun-drenched hills of our estate Mongibello delle Mandorlaie in Southern Maremma. Ad Astra is an approachable yet simultaneously complex red wine that is also a true pleasure when enjoyed young. Deep ruby red, suggestive nose of plums and berries and with a hint of licorice; a fine wine with a complex bouquet. Excellently suited to all variations of fish and different appetizers.

Winery Information

Nittardi

Nittardi is a boutique winery situated in the heart of the Chianti Classico region, with vineyards in Chianti Classico and Maremma in southern Tuscany. The Nittardi Estate, on the boundary between the provinces of Siena and Florence, was originally a defensive tower known as early as 1183 by the name of “Nectar Dei” (The Nectar of the God). The 2015 Ad Astra is an informal blend of 50% Sangiovese with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Fruit comes from the Maremma area of Coastal Tuscany. This is a soft and accessible wine with luscious layers of blackberry, dried cherry, sweet spice and toasted nut. This is a great bottle to pair with fettuccine with a wild boar ragù.

Deep cherry red. Despite the blend, this still smells both Italian, in an tangy savoury way, and of Sangiovese. The Cabernet Sauvignon is there in a touch of cassis but it does not dominate at all. This is already silky, and has a cool fresh elegance. Lots of pleasure. Very fine tannic texture. (JH)

Fascinating spice and chili character with the blackcurrant fruit. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh and clean finish. Made from sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and syrah. Drink or hold.

Made with 40% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 10% Syrah and 5% Petit Verdot, this offers aromas of red currant, cedar and cooking spice. The firm palate delivers anise, white pepper and dried aromatic herb alongside assertive tannins. Drink 2017–2021.
