Peter Lehmann

Peter Lehmann started off working for Yalumba and then became Saltram’s winemaker and manager in 1960. In 1977 Saltram instructed Peter to buy less grapes from their Barossa growers as there was a glut of grapes at the time. Since Peter had given them his word to buy the grapes, he refused, telling the desperate growers “I’ll take your grapes and turn them into wine, but I’ll only be able to pay you when I sell the wine”. They gratefully accepted and the deal was sealed with a handshake. Peter's word was his bond and it is widely accepted that without this deal the Barossa would have lost a huge slice of its old vines. After months of negotiations with Dalgety, which owned Saltram, Peter was allowed to start an outside company called Masterson Barossa Vineyards in order to buy and process the grapes. The inspiration of the name came from the legendary gambler Sky Masterson from the musical Guys and Dolls - because starting the company was such a gamble - and in keeping with this theme the Queen of Clubs was chosen as the logo for the company. Casella Family Brands have owned Peter Lehmann since 2016 and today those long-standing relationships, previously built by Peter Lehmann, continue, giving one of the most sophisticated medium sized winemaking operations in the Barossa Valley unparalleled access to the best quality grapes from across the region with over 750 individual vineyard sites on offer. Peter Lehmann is legendary in Australia's winemaking history and the winery is one of Australia's most highly regarded. Their comprehensive range of premium wines offer something for any occasion, each one expressing the unique and distinctive characteristics of the Barossa.
