Wine tasting notes

Colour:Medium red. Aroma: Attractive and complex aromas of ripe black cherries and strawberry compote backed up by subtle French oak and some damp forest floor elements.Changes with every swirl and sniff. Palate: Although typically elegant, the palate has good concentration of juicy strawberry / cherry fruit and just a hint of oak and maybe some damp earth. Fine tannins and balanced acid add some length and a little structure to the palate.

Tasted Oct 2014 - 100% Lenswood fruit. Slightly deeper, more purple crimson than their Rapide. Earthy nose - they mention 'damp forest floor' on the back label, and that's exactly what it smells like. Deep rounded flavours wrapped in gossamer-light silky tannins. Black sweet cherries and clove, followed by cool tea-leaf flavours. Lovely transparency and purity. Slightly dry on the finish, with just not quite enough length to match the depth and definition on the mid palate. But it's still a lovely, elegant, silk scarf of a wine. (TC)

Decanter Panel Tasting - Australian Pinot Noir Roger Jones 18.5pts - Sweet and delicate palate with great balance between controlled fruit and silky smooth oak. Hints of Asian spices; this would be great with Peking duck as you get lovely Chinese plum jam nuances from this. Complete. Justin Knock 18.75pts- Showstopping whole-bunch aromatics. Autumnal wood smoke, Lapsang Souchong tea, lavender and beautiful yet indefinable red fruits. Really sublime, classy and complex; almost otherworldly. Anthony Rose 18.5pts - Fine strawberry aromatic quality with lovely spicy oak. There is a seductively juicy mulberry fruit richness, incisive acidity and firm tannins with a firm dry, savoury feel to the finish.

Vinification Notes

Grapes are hand harvested, chilled and transported to Pikes Vintners winery in the Clare Valley. Most fruit is lightly crushed and destemmed prior to pressing or fermentation. Some whole bunch pressing carried out on Chardonnay with most Pinot Noir being destemmed only. Minimal amounts of SO2 added in the vineyard to protect against oxidation in delicate aromatic white varieties. SO2 added to Pinot Noir prior to maceration/fermentation. Pectic enzymes added to white varieties ex press, juice/must acid adjusted where necessary. Inert gases, carbon dioxide and nitrogen are used extensively to protect all our wines from oxidation. Pinot Noir is matured in oak for 12 months prior to bottling and Chardonnay can have 10 months or so in barrel. We use only Burgundy sourced premium quality French oak barrels. We top our barrels once a month during most of the year. Chardonnay is racked only once (off lees) prior to bottling, while the Pinot Noir may have up two rackings prior to bottling.
