Wine tasting notes

A golden yellow color with a bright greenish hue Rich, intense and fruity aromas. Scents of peach mousse, black figs, rose and vanilla cream mingle with overtones of hazelnut and orange blossom honey. It is soft, round and concentrated on the palate. The fruit flavors are wonderfully balanced by a powerful streak of acidity and rich mineral character.

Winery Information

Since its inception in 1985 the Planeta winery has in a relatively short space of time established itself as one of the most dynamic and quality orientated wineries in the whole of Italy. The fact that the estate is based in the south west corner of Sicily ? an island which for so long has been a quality winemaking backwater ? makes the achievement all the more remarkable. Dec 2015 - Reviewer : Monica Larner - The 2014 Sicilia Menfi Chardonnay takes Sicilian white wine to a whole new level. The Planeta family has been tinkering with this wine for a number of years and has gradually lessened the overall oak impact. That change is evident here and the grapes have benefitted from the excellent 2014 growing season. This was one of the best vintages in recent memory on the Mediterranean island. The bouquet offers balanced spice and ripe fruit with soothing creaminess and big intensity. I'm going to suggest a long drinking window for a wine of this high quality.

Bright golden yellow. Strong notes of vanilla and caramel complicate tropical fruit nuances on the nose. Then rich and ripe, with buttery and oaky flavors of orchard fruit and pineapple. Finishes broad and tactile with building oakiness. After last year’s more discreet Old World-styled mineral Chardonnay, this is a return to Planeta’s more typical Chardonnay style, one that harkens more to the New World. For those who like this style of buttery vanillin and tropical fruit-accented Chardonnay that will be just fine. (14% alcohol) (2015)17 pts

Golden-tinged straw yellow. Soft, creamy, apple nose with a hint of lemon skin. Surprisingly citric, lemony fruit palate with a fine, chalky texture and hints of hazelnuts. I think this will be better with an additional year in the bottle. A subtle rendition of Sicilian Chardonnay and against the cliché of richness and heaviness. (WS)

Bright and expressive, this elegant white is finely knit, with rich accents of oak spice and toast underscoring flavors of lemon parfait, Gala apple and lime blossom. Fine and creamy, presenting a lingering, minerally finish. Drink now through 2025.

A rich and layered chardonnay with so much cooked apple and pear character and vanilla undertones. It's a full-bodied white with the full Burgundy treatment. Sexy and enticing. Drink or hold.

There’s a reason why this finessed bottling is one of Sicily’s most iconic whites. It doles out juicy yellow apple, mature pear, white grapefruit, yellow peach and tropical fruit accented by notes of vanilla and hazelnut, with fresh acidity. Subtle oak adds complexity and structure. — K.O. (9/1/2014)

Vinification Notes

The grapes are crushed and destemmed; the juice is clarified through settling cold overnight and then inoculated with selected pure yeast. The fermentation and ageing is carried out in 225-litre French oak barrels, 50% new and 50% one year old. Malolactic fermentation in barrels for 15% of the total. 225 litres Allier oak barrels, half new and half one year old.
