Wine tasting notes

Ripe dark and red fruit aromas combine with delicate spiciness on the nose. The palate is full and rich with a velvety texture from the fine grained tannins. The finish is long with great persistence in the mouth supported by good acidity and minerality.

Alberto Antonini bought land next to his father?s estate in 2001 and planted about 50 hectares of vineyard. He set about ensuring the vineyards were state of the art, planted with a high density of 6,250 vines per hectare, which gives a low yield per vine and all the newest and best quality clones. The 2013 Chianti Riserva Vigna delle Conchiglie is a bit more mineral-driven and savory in profile than the Chianti Riserva, which also gives it a slightly austere feel. Chalk, orange peel and anise add nuance, while the fruit lies in the background. Today, the Vigna delle Conchiglie is decidedly less overt than most of the other wines in the range.

Single vineyard of 0.9 ha - the name refers to the seashells in the soil. Planted 1990 and Antonini is currently planting some white varieties on the adjoining land so that he can add this into the blend, which is currently 100% Sangiovese. Fermented in big oak and aged in large untoasted cask. Mid to light garnet. Fragrant, more floral than the Chianti Superiore. Delicate, elegant and beautifully fresh. Very fine texture, silky already but there's a definite structure under that finesse, great length. (JH)

This red shows depth and structure, showcasing the cherry, almond, earth and briar flavors. Firm, complex and vibrant, with a terrific finish of mineral, pepper and cherry accents. Best now if decanted. Drink now through 2024.

Vinification Notes

Grapes were hand picked in small 16 kilo cases and then delivered to the winery and gently destemmed and crushed. Grapes were not pumped but went into the fermenters with a gravity flow system. They were fermented in oak fermenters of varying sizes, at a maximum of 28°C for 10-12 days. Fermentation occurred with natural native yeasts to preserve the character of the single vineyard. The cap was punched down gently a few times a day, and the lees were stirred regularly during fermentation. After primary fermentation, the wine underwent an extended maceration of two weeks, after which it was racked into tight grained French oak barrels (20% new) where malolactic fermentation occurred. This was followed by ageing for 20 months. The wine was bottled without any fining or filtering to preserve the integrity of the flavours.
