Wine tasting notes

This Sauvignon Blanc bursts with vibrancy, concentration and a fresh flinty minerality. The nose shows fresh lime peel, pineapple citrus zest with tropical fruit and a hint of perfumed spice. The palate shows a lovely brightness and firm acidity with a richness and complexity, showing a multi layered wine with a long lingering finish. A harmonious wine in all senses showing what the Reyneke Sauvignon Blanc site can produce. Drink now or enjoy over the next five years.

Winery Information

Reyneke

Johan Reyneke began his foray into wine-making in 1998, on his family’s farm not far from the long-established town of Stellenbosch, near Cape Town. Years before this, the farm had begun a move to increase biodiversity, with the planting of indigenous vegetation, in part to encourage the return of local wildlife. Cultivation of vineyards along organic, then biodynamic, lines was a natural inclination. The terroir held true to its promise. The vineyards, on hillsides a few kilometres from.. read more

April 2017 - Neal Martin - The 2016 Sauvignon Blanc comes from three vineyards, whole bunch pressed and fermented in used barriques. It has a crisp, stony bouquet with light apple blossom and Granny Smith aromas. The palate is crisp, taut and linear; saline in the mouth with hints of capsicum and apple peelings towards the finish. Not the most persistent Sauvignon Blanc, but one of the more interesting.

The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc includes some whole-bunch-pressed fruit and was matured in third-fill and older French barrels. It has a perfumed, pressed flower bouquet with hints of white asparagus and a slight earthy aroma. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity - what you might describe as a "neutral" Sauvignon Blanc, with discreet grass clipping and nettle notes on the finish. Very fine.

Tasted Jan 2015 - Rich palate attack and savoury finish. A bit more floral than most Sauvignons. Long and layered. Quite floral and very different from most SBs.

A delightful, gently toasty style, with a subtle brioche and macadamia nut frame around the lemon curd, white peach and verbena flavors. Focused and racy through the finish. Drink now through 2019

This is a stunning wine, showing an abundance of character yet still with potential to evolve. It opens with notes of crisp apple flesh, white peach and lime that are hit by herbal accents of fresh fynbos, thyme and just-dried grass. The medium-weight palate is bright, yet amply concentrated and satisfying, as subtle hay and honeydew accents are kept in balance by bright, mouthwatering acidity and are followed by a pithy, textured, citrusy close. Drink now–2020.

Unlike the Reyneke Reserve White, also made from Sauvignon Blanc, this sees no new wood at all. It’s a bready, yeasty, leesy white with some tropical fruit intensity and a nettley, wellbalanced finish. 2018-21

Vinification Notes

The grapes are whole bunch pressed to limit the amount of soluable solids in the juice, since no settling enzymes are used. Spontaneous, natural fermentation occurs in 50% aged French barrels while 50% is tank fermented. After seven months further ageing the wine is bottled and released.
