Robert Oatley

Wine was in Robert Oatley's DNA, a fifth generation Australian whose family name can be traced back to the beginning of the country's European Settlement. The first family vineyards were planted in the late 1960's. Robert established the Rosemount winery in the Hunter Valley in 1968. Rosemount was sold to Southcorp in 2001, but by then Robert and his family had already established other wineries, including Oatley Wines and the label Wild Oats in the early 1990's, and in 2006 he founded his eponymous winery to reincarnate his family's winemaking dynasty. Robert Oatley was hugely instrumental in the Australian wine trade, an industry legend who took Australian wine to the world, but sadly died in 2016. His eldest son Sandy continues his father's vision and legacy. They have a deep understanding of viticulture, and source fruit from their own family vineyards and from an array of select quality growers of classic grape varieties across the key winemaking regions of Australia, focusing on Margaret River and Great Southern in Western Australia, and McLaren Vale in Southern Australia. For them the sense of place is paramount to create wines of character and integrity in a modern style which reflect their provenance, with the talented winemaker Larry Cherubino leading the winemaking team. The vineyards are managed as sustainably and organically as possible, and the winemaking approach is one of minimal intervention. The Rothview vineyard in Margaret River, now part of the Oatley family estate, was planted in 1858. Fruit from here goes to make their 1858 Chardonnay; this grape variety didn't arrive in Australia until the 1970's, when the Oatley family where among the first to pioneer this now predominant variety. You will notice a nautical connotation with some of the wines: Robert Oatley owned the nine-time Sidney-Hobart winning yacht Wild Oats XI - he was a skilled yachtsman whose yacht-racing career spanned 40 years. Robert Oatley produce a range of wines in a trio of labels. The entry level great value, but the high quality Signature Series delivers immediate appeal with satisfying flavours over an elegant frame. The Finisterre range focuses on single varietal, single region wines from small parcels, and deliver wines with great clarity, purity, texture and flavour expression. The Pennant wines are the pinnacle of the Robert Oatley collection: handcrafted wines made in limited quantities from the best barrels of the most prized vineyard blocks which have cellaring ability. Robert Oatley's mantra was that wine should be “a darned good drink”, and his entire portfolio of wines do not disappoint!
