Wine tasting notes

Our Straw Wine is deliciously sweet, yet still bright, fresh and complex, with honeyed characters and hints of lemon.

eRobertParker.com. #209 Oct 2013. Reviewer : Neal Martin. The 2011 Straw Wine was cropped during the second and third week of February 2011. A blend of 60% Chenin Blanc, 23% Viognier and 17% Crouchen, the berries were left to shrivel on straw mats for around 4 weeks and then pressed for four or five hours. After 3-days settling, racked into used 300-liter barrels where they fermented over seven weeks to achieve 10.5% alcohol. The nose is strangely reticent but the palate is nicely balanced with fresh notes of papaya, passion fruit and quince, the finish well-defined and the acidity maintaining freshness right to the finish. This is a thoughtfully crafted straw wine that would work well either before or after dinner. Drink now-2018+

Tasted Oct 2012 -Exciting layers of flavour and quite tense. Seductive tarte tatin juice. VVGV

John Platter (2009)4 stars

Pure melon, ripe peach & white flowers on 2009 () from air-dried chenin, crouchen (76:24). Bright, elegant with firm mineral core, lemon zest farewell. Shade shy of standout 2008.

Vinification Notes

This wine has been made using a centuries old process of drying grapes and straw to concentrate flavour. Fully ripened Chenin Blanc and Crouchen Blanc grapes were hand picked at 23 - 23,5 degrees Balling then laid out on straw to dry for 4 - 5 weeks. This allows the grapes to slowly dehydrate, concentrating the natural sugar and flavour of the grapes. These raisined grapes are then gently pressed @ 39 - 42 degrees Balling and the small quantity of sweet juice obtained is inoculated and fermented in old barrels to produce a luscious sweet wine.
