Wine tasting notes

The image on the label is directly from a classic pulp fiction novel entitled ‘Sin on Wheels.’ This might as well be ‘Sin in Glass.’ It’s real simple. Three easy steps to unadulterated pleasure. Turn. Splash. Savor. Unfiltered confessions flow with each sip of this passionate glowing red. Sourced from nine sites in McLaren Vale, this is a ‘classic’ South Australia blend for sure. Bright purple. Assertive aromas of raspberry liqueur, potpourri and peppery spices are complemented by a suave floral quality. Smooth, sweet and seamless, offering vibrant red fruit and floral pastille flavors that take a darker turn to blackberry with air. Finishes sweet and long, with harmonious tannins and a hint of candied flowers.

Some Young Punks

Some Young Punks epitomize the best of New Australia. The punks consist of Col McBryde (Guinness Book of World Record holder for most tattoos while holding multiple Ph.D's and voted Australia's Young Gun Winemaker of the Year), Jen Gardner (self confessed nerdy yeast expert) and thirdly Nic Bourke (Self proclaimed number one fan of Culture Club - google Nic Bourke and look at the pic in drag - and winemaker extraordinaire). May 2014 - Reviewer : Lisa Perrotti-Brown. Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2012 Passion Has Red Lips Cabernet Shiraz opens to aromas of blackcurrants and blackberries with hints of pencil lead and sage. This medium-bodied wine has a decent core of fruit supported by a light grip of chewy tannins and lively acid. It finishes with moderate persistence.

Vinous/Antonio Galloni (2014)89 pts

Inky ruby. Aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, mocha and pipe tobacco, with a hint of cracked pepper adding vivacity. Plush and seamless on the palate, offering cherry pie, blueberry preserve and vanilla flavors. Soft tannins provide gentle grip to the nicely persistent, dark fruit-dominated finish, with the vanilla note echoing. -- Josh Raynolds

Wine Spectator (2016)88 pts

A rustic mix of dried berry flavors and notes of herb, earth and cedar, showing plenty of charm to the white pepper and sage accents that linger. Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Drink now through 2027. 5,140 cases made.

Vinification Notes

2014 was a warm (read hot) final stretch to the growing season marked by quite a bit of pre-harvest rain that scared the bejesus out of farmers and winemakers alike. In typical Aussie fashion lots of beers and waiting were followed by the absolute perfect end to the vintage with moderate temps and dry light winds. The result was a ripe vintage with high natural acid...disaster was avoided of high heat and tons of rain and good things came to those who waited. Following the style of the 2013, the '14 has even less oak and bright, fruitful flavors and acidity. The juice spent between 6 and 35 days on skins before being pressed to neutral French barriques (20%) and stainless steel (80%) for fermentation and maturation.
