Wine tasting notes

Lifted and fragrant with aromas of crushed raspberries and spice perfumes, wood spice, peppercorns, sandalwood and dark roses overlay tart red plum and cherry fruits. The medium bodied palate displays intense spice, red plum and dark cherry flavours. Bright and lively, this wine is characterized by fresh, cherry-like perfumes, moderate alcohol and balanced acidity.

James Suckling (2016)93 pts

A very cleverly struck tradeoff between power and definition. Loaded with blackberry fruits, earthiness and spicy characters on the nose and palate. Tannins reach through and punctuate the palate reliably. The finish holds long and even. Drink now to 2025+. Screw cap.

James Halliday (2016)96 pts

It's easy to be enchanted by this wine. It'll garner complexity in time, while it's sheer bliss to drink now thanks to its excellent fruit and perfectly poised tannins. A cascade of red fruits picks up a spice trail of star anise and cinnamon, some menthol too, en route to full-bodied, very detailed, palate.

Wine Front (2016)93 pts

A brighter, fresher expression of Barossa shiraz, grown and selected from elevated or exposed sites that allow for judicious, earlier picking. Hand harvested, natural fermented, old-large format oak and concrete for its maturation. Shiraz with a Euro lisp. It’s perky and fresh feeling, juicy, bright in fruit flavour, lifted on green herbs and mescal-like whole bunch influence, crisp in tannin and glassy in acidity. The sum of this is a just-medium weight, berry-bright red of lithe nature and great vitality. Silkiness is the feel, it’s addictive sipping in that regard. It’s such a pretty expression of Barossa’s staple, magic in that respect. Like.

Vinification Notes

Spinifex's Syrah is Pete Schell's take on a leaner, higher-toned expression of his adopted region. To this end, Schell sources from "...generally higher, cooler sites, where earlier harvesting gives wines with bright fruit expression and a textural freshness". The wine, naturally fermented with a judicious use of whole clusters (on average 30%) in a combination of stainless steel, wood and concrete fermenters, also sees a shorter maturation than the Esprit and Bête Noir, et al. The 2017 was cropped from five high, exposed parcels in the Barossa and Eden Valley, where the soils are generally poor and skeletal - for the most part light, gravelly and silty sands over deeply weathered base rocks of varied origins. Vine age varies from 25 to 115 years old (averaging 50 years old), and all fruit is hand harvested
