Wine tasting notes

Chardonnay was extensively planted on our vineyard when it was first established. As wine styles have changed we have proactively removed and updated our Chardonnay blocks with improved varietal selections. The fruit for Envoy is taken from a unique corner of one of our original Chardonnay blocks, 'B Block.' 'B Block' is home to five Burgundian clones of Chardonnay. The soil structure gives the best of both worlds - structure and fatness from the more complex top soil, and fruit definition from the free draining nature of the underlying gravel. Pale straw colour. On the noser ripe peach, meyer lemon and vanilla pod. On the palate White fruit flavours marry to a delicate tannin structure from a cool year. Crisp acidity finishes off this powerful wine.

Spy Valley

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneering what was then a Marlborough sub-region, the Johnsons? In 2000, they began producing and selling wine under the Spy Valley label, its name derived from a nearby satellite communications monitoring station (or spy base). There are three ranges of wines within Spy Valley: Satellite, Spy Valley,.. read more

Rich, mouth-filling Chardonnay with white peach, grapefruit, bran biscuit and root ginger flavours. Quite a concentrated and moderately complex wine that’s deliciously accessible now but should develop well.

Wine Estate (2012)4.5 stars

Tight, elegant wine, still very youthful. Estate-grown in the Waihopai Valley and barrel-aged for 18 months, it has mouthfilling body, deep grapefruit-like flavours, with hints of limes and nuts, a minerally streak and a long finish. Still a baby, it’s a classic cellaring style; open 2015+.

Vinification Notes

Grapes were hand harvested from our 10/5 clone vines from 'F block', and fermented in stainless steel and small oak vats. Barrel aged for 18 months before bottling.
