Wine tasting notes

The fruit for Envoy Pinot Noir comes from our oldest vines, in the area we call 'F Block.' Clay top soil, free draining gravel substrate, cool spring, warm dry summers and extended ripening combine with root stock, clonal selection and vine age to produce small bunches with concentrated flavours. Bright ruby colour. On the nose plum and cherry with signature cranberry and anise notes from this block. On the palate Initially light but with deceptive structural weight, the mid palate is soft and sweet with abundant fruit. Spice and chocolate round out the flavour spectrum.

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneering what was then a Marlborough sub-region, the Johnsons? Lower Waihopai development continued, with the fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies. Lisa Perrotti-Brown.Pale to medium ruby-purple-colored, the 2011 Envoy Pinot Noir opens with aromas of kirsch, preserved cranberries and raspberry coulis dotted with nuances of violets, rose petals, dried leaves and cinnamon. The palate is bursting with loads of red berry and perfumed, spicy flavors and is nicely supported by medium level, finely grained tannins and exuberant acidity before finishing long and layered. Drink it now to 2017+.

Ripe, fleshy Pinot Noir with plum, cherry, dark berry and spicy oak flavours. Full-flavoured and quite gutsy wine with a firm, drying finish. Needs a little time to mellow and develop even greater complexity.

Medium to deep red colour with purple tinges. The aroma shows soft dark cherry and plum aromas, with a gentle but definite lacing of oaky spice. It has quite an aromatic perfume. Bright and upright in the mouth, with firmness from tannin and acidity. It's lively and firm - almost a trifle tough. It demands food, and would take some age well.

Still very youthful, the 2011 vintage is a powerful, ripe style, estate-grown in the lower Waihopai Valley and barrel-aged for 18 months. Full-coloured and sturdy, it has strong plum and spice flavours, a hint of liquorice, and a tight finish. Best 2015+

Full, even, dark ruby-red colour with light purple hues. This has a very elegant and finely aromatic nose with spicy red berry fruits seamlessly entwined with red floral fragrances. Delicate oak and herb nuances add detail and interest. The bouquet is quite harmonious and complete. Medium-full bodied, bright and fragrant cherry and raspberry fruit feature on the palate with very fine oak spicing and fresh, underlying acidity providing drive and energy. The mouthfeel is racy and fine-textured with refined tannin extraction underlining the flavours. Layers of spices, liquorice and oak emerge from the tight and elegant core and carry through to a very long-lingering sweet and lacy finish. This is a beautiful aromatic Pinot Noir with layers of red fruits, florals and spices, and a racy, fine-grained mouthfeel. Match with poultry and pork over the next 6-8 years. Clone 10/5 fruit from the company’s oldest vines, from ‘F Block’, hand-picked and fermented to 14.5% alc., the wine aged 18 months in oak. 19.0-/20 Jan 2014

Vinification Notes

Grapes were hand harvested from our 10/5 clone vines from 'F block', and fermented in stainless steel and small oak vats. Barrel aged for 18 months before bottling.
