Wine tasting notes

Pale Straw. Classic Marlborough aromas of grapefruit, elderflower and a fusion of tropical fruits. Crisp and fine with a silken mouthfeel. Pure fruit flavours that persist through to a dry finish.

Winery Information

Spy Valley

Bryan and Jan Johnson established the first of their 380 acres of estate vineyards in 1993. Pioneering what was then a Marlborough sub-region, the Johnsons? Lower Waihopai development continued, with the fruit being grown and sold to other wine companies. In 2000, they began producing and selling wine under the Spy Valley label, its name derived from a nearby satellite communications monitoring station (or spy base). There are three ranges of wines within Spy Valley: Satellite, Spy Valley,.. read more

Wine Advocate Issue #209. Oct 2013. Lisa Perrotti-Brown. The 2013 Sauvignon Blanc displays a lovely lemongrass, white blossom and grapefruit peel nose with an undercurrent of dill, crushed stones and pears. Crisp, refreshing and clean in the mouth, it has a bit of vegetal kick in the medium to long finisho

Sep/Oct 13. By Stephen Tanzer. Pale, bright yellow-green. Cool aromas of lime peel, grapefruit, dusty stone, fresh herbs and pepper. Juicy and moderately intense, with a peppery quality to the soft citrus and tropical fruit flavors. Some unabsorbed CO2 gives the wine a brisk impression today. Finishes with a slightly raw, tart-edged note of white grapefruit but also a hint of sweetness. A good effort for the vintage.

Tasted July 31, 2012 - Gold Sommelier Wine AwardsRelatively simple aroma - grassy and just a touch smoky. Then more gooseberry freshness on the palate. Fresh but rounded out with a touch of sweetness. Well made if unexcting. (JH)

Focused and refreshing, with a whiff of celery leaf complementing the stone fruit, citrus and fleshy melon flavors. Ample acidity surges on the finish

Better known for its aromatic whites, Spy Valley has fashioned a solid, middle-of-the-road Sauvignon Blanc. Passion fruit and pineapple flavors form the medium-weight core of the wine, while grassy notes on the nose reemerge on the finish. — J.C. (7/1/2014)

Attractively weighty and moderately concentrated Sauvignon Blanc with ripe guava, passion fruit, nectarine and a suggestion of lemon grass. Nice purity, good texture and a moderately lengthy finish.

Wine Estate (2013)4 stars

Tight, crisp, very youthful wine, grown in the Wairau Valley and made with ‘a portion’ of barrel fermentation. Light lemon/green, with ripe, sweet-fruit characters and vibrant passionfruit/lime flavours, showing good intensity. Best 2014+.

Always a good buy. The 2013 vintage is a tight, crisp, very youthful wine, grown in the Wairau Valley and made with 'a portion' of barrel fermentation. Light lemon/green, it has ripe, sweet-fruit characters, vibrant passionfruit/lime flavours, showing good intensity, and a dry (2.1 grams/litre of residual sugar) finish.

Brilliant, deep, straw-yellow colour with pale green hues on rim. The nose is fresh and gently voluminous with ripe passionfruit aromas along with limes, white florals and mouthwatering minerally elements at the core. Dry to taste, elegantly presented, luscious flavours of passionfruit are enlivened by bright, juicy acidity. There are lime, tropical fruit and gooseberry notes intermingling with mineral and chalky elements forming a very fine-textured line. The mouthfeel is soft with poise between raciness and dryness. Thirst-quenching acidity underlines the palate flow and carries the restrained, pungent fruit to a very long, dry, delicately grainy finish. This is an elegant and fine-featured Sauvignon Blanc with passionfruit flavours and mouthwatering mineral notes. Serve with seafood, poultry, salads and vegetables over the next 2 years. Fruit from estate and contract growers, fermented with a portion in barrels to 13.0% alc. and 2.1 g/L RS

Juicy and clean, this is bright and floral, more tart, vegetal and mineral than sweet and ripe. Refreshing.

Vinification Notes

After picking and gently pressing, each vineyard block was fermented separately. A small portion was fermented in barrels before blending and bottling.
