Wine tasting notes

Freshness is THE fact of the vintage: it is everywhere, it gives the structure and the relief which generates the finesse. This is the guarantee of a good evolution as well. What I like in a good Gigondas is the body of the grenache combinated with the coolness of our terroir. This wine reminds me of the wines of my father: classical, straightforward, solid and simply so good. Notes of campher, cherry, gingerbread, crushed strawberry, blackberry, pepper.

St Cosme

Louis Barruol is the 14th generation Barruol to make wine at Saint Cosme. The Ch. was built in the late 16th Century on the site of a former Roman villa, and the remains of a Roman wine cellar, carved into the stone of the hillside, still exist in the Ch.'s caves. Wine Advocate #210 Dec 2013 - Jeb Dunnock - Moving to the Gigondas cuvees, starting with the wines in bottle, the classic 2011 Gigondas is a serious effort that gets you a good bit of the class and richness found in the upper, single vineyard cuvees, yet for a lot less buck. A blend of 60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah, it gives up toasty, spice-driven notes of blackberries, ground pepper and cured meats that flow to a medium to full-bodied, textured and layered effort that has notable freshness and sweet tannin. It will shine for over a decade and represents an excellent value.

Jan/Feb '14 by Josh Raynolds - Bright ruby. Energetic aromas of fresh red fruits, potpourri, white pepper and allspice gain power with air and pick up a note of licorice. Lively and precise on the palate, offering sappy raspberry and floral pastille flavors and a hint of orange zest. Shows very good focus and lift on the sweet, seamless finish, with a trail of spice and mineral notes. This is a pretty impressive effort for an entry-level bottling. (2011)17 pts

Tasted Dec 2012 - Very dense crimson. Thick and sweet with lots of satisfaction already. Tannins lurk. All in excellent balance. Powerful, mind you…

Offers a solid, fleshy feel, with lots of crushed plum, warm raspberry and steeped black cherry fruit flavors rolled together. Notes of black tea, licorice root and alder fill in on the finish. Very well done for the vintage.
