Sula Vineyards

Sula was founded in 1999 by Rajeev Samant in Nashik, about 190 kilometres north of Mumbai. It was the region's first winery and it paved the way for the emergence of India's wine industry. A pioneer, innovator and leader, as now around 80% of the country's wine is produced here and Nashik is known as the “Wine Capital of India”. Rajeev studied at Stanford University in California, where he received a bachelors degree in Economics and a masters degree in Engineering Management. He then worked for Oracle, the American multinational computer technology corporation and, although he had been introduced to wine in the US, when he returned home to India in the early 1990's, wine was not on his agenda. But a visit to his family's land in Nashik, a region well established for cultivating table grapes, planted a seed, and Rajeev became curious. This led to him spending three months in a small winery in California which belonged to Kerry Damskey, an influential winemaker and wine consultant, and now Sula's master winemaker. The name Sula is derived from Rajeev's Mother's name, Sulabha, and the instantly recognisable sun logo with a smiling face, has shone on their bottles since inception. The first vineyard was planted in 1996 with 5 acres, and in 1999 India's first Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc was launched. This was followed by India's first Zinfandel in 1998, made from cuttings smuggled into the country by Rajeev from Sonoma. India's first tasting room opened in 2005, and the country's first Riesling was produced in 2008. Sula now have around 1,800 acres under vine in owned and contracted vineyards. The Nashik vineyards are located in the Western Ghats, planted at 600 metres above sea level on soils of volcanic origin, ranging from weathered basalt through red laterite to heavy clay. Vineyards are also planted in Dindori, a subregion of Nashik, where the soils consist of red laterite and basalt rock; this is one of the best regions for red wine grapes, where vineyards in proximity to hills and rivers have diverse microclimates. Sula operate wineries in two states: one in Maharashtra and the other in Karnataka, both equipped with the latest technologies. The wines are cold-fermented, blended in stainless steel and aged in the best French and American oak barrels. Sula are committed to sustainability and the environment and this philosophy underpins everything they do; they are one of the most eco-friendly companies in India. Sula focus on Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc and Riesling for their white wines, and Syrah, Zinfandel, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for their reds, to craft a broad range of wines. These wines represent the rich heritage of India and offer unbeatable value for money! The sun is shining brightly!
