Tasca d'Almerita

The island of Sicily is home to the Tasca d?Almerita family of estates: Regaleali, Capofaro, and Whitaker. Dec 2015 - The Tasca family's Sicilian Cabernet Sauvignon never disappoints and is always one of the most distinctive expressions of the French grape found anywhere in Italy. The 2012 Sicilia Contea di Sclafani Cabernet Sauvignon Tenuta Regaleali is a wine of soaring intensity and authenticity. The bouquet shows dark fruit aromas but it is also characterized by green tones of Mediterranean herb, black olive and caper that link the wine to a sense of place. The tannins are juicy and firm, leading to the promise of long cellar aging potential.

Tasted April 2012 - Intense deep ruby. Leafy, blackcurrant and black pepper. International profile with sweet oak, and concentrated, sweet dark fruit. (WS)

Oct 31, 2014 - An aromatic version, with finely sculpted tannins, this medium-bodied red offers expressive smoke, dried mint and cured tobacco accents layered with fruit flavors of red currant jam, mulberry and dried cherry. Juicy finish. Drink now through 2021

James Suckling (2010)92 pts

I like the berry and hints of tobacco character in this full-bodied red with soft tannins and fresh acidity. Long and flavorful. Drink or hold.

Wine Enthusiast (2009)92 pts

Despite the problematic vintage, this wine opens with bold aromatic intensity, featuring notes of prune, plum, blackberry and spice. On the palate, the wine is structured and firm, with a touch of sweet cherry on the finish. — M.L. (3/1/2013)

Vinification Notes

The wine underwent traditional fermentation at 26-28ºC, with a fourteen-day maceration. It then spent twelve months in Allier and Tronçais tonneaux, with sixty percent new oak and forty percent second fill.
