Tormaresca

Tormaresca is Antinori's estate in Puglia. Recognising the potential of this region in the very heel of Italy's boot, they started to invest here in 1998. The name of the estate is a play on the Puglian dialect - the “towers by the sea” - the ancient fortified seaside towers that overlook the Adriatic Sea, built to defend the Puglian coastline from pirates. You will see a depiction of one of these on Tormaresca's labels. Wine has been made here since the time of the ancient Greeks. Not long ago it was the largest wine grape producing region in Italy, but the area became known for quantity, not quality, with much of the grapes being sent elsewhere in Italy to make table wine. The terroir here though is marvellous and Puglia's native grape varieties deserve to be recognised. Antinori knew that there were exceptional wines here just waiting to be discovered and Tormaresca are leading Puglia's modern renaissance with classic winemaking and the latest technologies. They operate two estates. Tenuta Bocca di Lupo is located in the DOC region of Castel del Monte. This is one of the most prestigious appellations in Puglia, and Tormaresca have 140 hectares here under vine planted at around 300 metres above sea level in the cool, breezy climate of Alta Murgia. This is a dramatic and extreme landscape with its proximity to the ancient Monte Vulture Volcano. Chardonnay, Fiano Pugliese, Moscato Reale, Aglianico, Cabernet Sauvignon and Nero de Troia are all cultivated here on calcareous clay soils. Masseria Maime is located in the Alto Salento, extending along the Adriatic coast with 350 hectares under vine, featuring Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Primitivo and Negroamaro, which all suit the Mediterranean climate here, with its mild winters and long, hot and dry summers, cooled by the Adriatic Sea. Here Tormaresca combine innovation with age-old traditions: new espalier vineyards exist next to vines grown in the ancient alberello training system, traditionally used to reduce water consumption to a minimum. From their mix of indigenous and international grape varieties Tormaresca craft a range of wines with real character and territorial identity, and all the quality you would expect from the name of Antinori who can trace their winemaking history back 26 generations.
