Trinity Hill

Trinity Hill was conceptualised over a glass of wine! In the late 1980's winemaker John Hancock met with Robyn and Robert Wilson in their Bleeding Heart French restaurant in London. The seed of the idea that was planted at that time became a reality in 1993, and Trinity Hill was born in Hawke's Bay on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island. There is a range of soils and microclimates in Hawke's Bay that are quite unique, and John knew that wines of outstanding quality could be produced here for some of the great restaurants in the world. It is New Zealand's premier red wine area, where the deep gravelly soils of the Gimblett Gravels, left by the Ngaruroro River as it changed course over thousands of years, yields grapes with highly concentrated flavours and aromas. Trinity Hill grow Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir in cooler areas to retain the freshness of these varietals, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot in warmer sites to ensure optimum ripening. They also cultivate Chardonnay, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Francesca; the last two varieties from which they produce port style wines. Trinity Hill's flagship wine is the magnificent 100% Syrah Homage. John Hancock worked the 1996 vintage at Jaboulet in the Rhône, forming a close relationship with the esteemed winemaker Gérard Jaboulet, who strongly influenced his approach to making Syrah. Gérard sent three clones of Syrah from the Jaboulet Hermitage vineyards to New Zealand as a gift, which John planted in 2001. Gérard's untimely death at the age of 55 inspired John to create Homage, which is crafted both from the Rhône vines and the original Syrah vines John planted in the Gimblett Gravels in 1995. This wine is only made in exceptional years and is truly world-class. Trinity Hill's philosophy is quality over quantity and yields are kept low to craft a small range of distinctive wines with elegance and a powerful intensity of flavour that reflect the character of each vineyard - and Trinity Hill's wines still feature on the Bleeding Heart's wine menu!
