Wine tasting notes

Rich, ruby red with hints of crimson. Ripe red berry fruit complexed with mocha and licorice notes. Fragrance and perfume is aided by the Viognier. Plum, blackberry, cherry and cassis are the dominant flavours, with a structure that is tight and tense, allowing the wine to age gracefully for many years.

Reviewer : Lisa Perrotti Brown - The 2009 Gimblett Gravels Homage Syrah offers ripe, pure blackberry and blueberry aromas with underlying notes of peppercorns, baking spices, earth, tree bark and mulberries. Medium bodied and taut in the mouth, the muscular blackberry and earth flavors are well supported by a firm level of fine grained tannins and crisp acidity. The finish is long and savory. Drink it 2012 through 2018+.

Sep 09. By Stephen Tanzer. Bright, deep ruby-red. Nose began high-pitched and quite tight, with a distinctly medicinal austerity, then revealed some blackberry and licorice nuances with air. Highly concentrated, dense and chewy, with a penetrating quality to its very youthful flavors of dark berries, pepper and spices. Boasts terrific inner-mouth lift and energy. With extended aeration, this very ripe wine showed a thicker aspect and even a liqueur-like quality. Seems more backward at the same stage than the superlative 2006 version, and barely hinting at its full personality today.

Tasted Aug 2011 - Another ridiculously heavy bottle from the land of greens. Now this is serious on the nose - I'm tempted to make comparisons with Hermitage here! Great intensity and lovely silky texture but serious depth. Bravo! This is very clever, because it could be enjoyed already and yet it clearly has one heck of a long way to go. Meaty, dense and manly - a great lesson in the Syrahness of Syrah. Lipsmackingly good. Luscious texture.

Less weighty than some of the other top-rated Hawke’s Bay Syrahs, Homage relies on complexity rather than raw power. Deep coloured. Thrillingly intense nose is dark, meaty, spicy, peppery and brooding. Hard to describe all the aromas. The palate is intense, concentrated and tight with lovely freshness and pure, dark, spicy fruit, backed up by huge tannins. Delicious now, but just a baby, made in a wonderful Rhôney style with freshness and definition.

Flavours cascade in the palate; they work from high notes of small red berry fruit to vanilla sticks, pomegranate, black cherry elixir and cinnamon. Layers of silken texture fall lightly; there is no cloy in this wine. It’s effortlessly concentrated, close to the definition of finesse and profoundly long in the mouth, yet a lick of acidity is the nudge-and-wink of further longevity. Very beautiful. Drink : 2011 - 2026."

Homage is one of Hawke's Bay's star turns at every vintage and 2009 is no exception. Big, intense and very rich wine with ripe fruit, some black pepper and strong spicy oak flavours. The texture is even more impressive. It is mouth-filling and reasonably soft with support from fine, ripe tannins. Great now but will age well.

Purple-hued black-red colour with excellent depth, near impenetrable. This is elegantly expressed on nose with intense and concentrated bouquet of black berry fruits lifted with violetty perfumes, along with an array of dark spices and pepper. Full-bodied and showing great concentration of sweetly rich black berry and plum fruits, Asian spices, liquorice and florals. This is in the riper fruit spectrum , but still possesses an excellent aromatic nature. The lusciousness of the fruit is well-matched by the very fine-grained, but firm tannin extraction and the wine exudes potential. This should develop very well over the next decade. 98% Syrah and 2% Viognier, 70% from the ‘Gimblett Estate' and 30% from the ‘Gimblett Stones' sites, co-fermented with a high portion of whole berries to 13.9% alc., the wine aged in mostly new French oak barriques for18 months.

Vinification Notes

The handpicked grapes were gently destemmed and lightly crushed to leave a large portion of uncrushed berries. Viognier is crushed with the Syrah, aiding colour, tannin structure and fragrance. Fermentation took place in open top stainless steel fermenters and the cap was hand plunged four times daily for optimum colour and tannin extraction. A short post-fermantation maceration complexed the tannins, softening and stabilising the wine. The wine was subsequently aged in new French oak barriques for about 18 months, with malolactic fermentation taking place in the barrel. Careful, controlled exposure to air during racking aids in maturation of the wine. The wine was bottled in October 2007.
