Tua Rita

In 1984 Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio Bisti acquired a property with around 15 hectares of land in the Val de Cornia in the Tuscan metalliferous hills of the Upper Maremma. Their original plan was to realise a lifelong dream of settling in this rural landscape to farm the land and enjoy nature but then they planted 2 hectares of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and began to make “vins de garage” and their plans changed! Recognising the potential of the terroir here between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Colline Metallifere, they gradually extended their vineyards and now have 30 hectares under vine. They farm organically and the passionate meticulous tending of the vineyards and carefully handcrafted wines saw them become one of Italy's most successful producers of garage wines. The name of the winery is an inversion of Rita Tua's first and last name. Tua Rita's first vintage was in 1992 and their wines rapidly gained recognition and accolades followed in rafts. Unfortunately Virgilio died in 2010, but the winery remains family-run with Rita's commitment and that of her daughter Simena and her husband Stefano Frascolla. The Upper Maremma is a special location, with its proximity to the sea, and unique clay-based soils which imbue the wines with singular iron and salty nuances. Under cultivation are the white Traminer, Riesling, Chardonnay, Vermentino and Ansonica, and the red Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Sangiovese. In 2016 Tua Rita acquired some vineyards on the island of Pantelleria from which they produce a passito wine from Zibibbo. Tua Rita's wines are hard to come by and their Super Tuscan wines have achieved near cult-like status. Keir is an unusual wine vinified and aged in amphora of which there is a red and a white version. The Bordeaux blend Giusti di Notri has received universal praise and their Flagship wine, the astonishingly concentrated and complex 100% Merlot - Redigaffi, has received the perfect 100 score from Robert Parker. It was the first wine in Italy to obtain this recognition, described by Parker “as close to perfection as a wine can get”. Tua Rita's wines are multifaceted, rich and full-bodied, yet elegant and refined, and presented in bottles with beautiful labels which are as sublime as their attention-grabbing wines.
