Description

On the banks of Tanunda Creek, in the heart of the Barossa where wild bush turkeys once roamed, grow Shiraz vines from 1847, some of the oldest planted in Australia, and indeed the world. These vines, propagated from cuttings brought to Australia from Hermitage Hill in the Rhône Valley in the 1830s remain a productive part of Turkey Flat’s vineyards. Despite having just completed their 169th vintage, they continue to produce truly exceptional grapes.

Turkey Flat Vineyards is a family-owned estate that forms a vital part of the Barossa Valley’s rich cultural heritage. Christie is the fourth generation of the Schulz family to become caretaker of the remarkable property, and the fifth generation, Christie’s eldest son Alex, is now involved in running the winery. Intensely aware of the individual ecosystems in the area, extensive viticultural research has been undertaken in the five vineyard sites, allowing the team to sensitively blend traditional Rhône varietals that speak confidently of their origin.

Throughout its production process, Turkey Flat seeks to operate in respect of the local ecosystems, instead of in competition with them. The vineyards survive on natural rainfall, with minimal tillage, and focus on reducing herbicide usage with the goal of becoming Organic Certified in the near future.

Wine tasting notes

A layered & thought-provoking blend inspired by the whites of the Rhone Valley. The underlying rich medley of fresh & roasted stone fruit is topped with a toasty note of spice-laced crumb. Balanced with a restrained zesty hit of ginger on the lingering finish.

Vinification Notes

Johann Fiedler moved to Bethany in 1843. It was here on the banks of Tanunda Creek where he planted an experimental garden, orchard & 72 varieties of grapes to see what would thrive best. Fiedler, a muse to generations of Barossa viticulturists and winemakers, inspired the planting of three white varietals; Marsanne, Viognier & Roussanne. The Turkey Flat Barossa Valley White blend is sourced from the Bethany and Stonewell regions of the Barossa. Traditional to Turkey Flat style the Marsanne was picked early and pressed lightly. The Viognier was handpicked, chilled, crushed and saw 48 hours on skins and then pressed lightly. The Roussanne was a little riper when handpicked and subsequently whole bunch pressed.
