Wine tasting notes

The 2011 Molino Loco Tinto is grown in the Castaño family vineyards, situated in the north of Yecla located at an altitude of 750 metres above sea level. The vineyards are dry-farmed (they are not irrigated) and the limestone soil is poor. This means that the roots of the vines grow deep into the earth in their search for precious minerals and nutrients, which helps ensure healthy, ripe, flavoursome grapes. The Monastrell vineyards are over 50 years old, while the Syrah vines are slightly younger, averaging around 15 years. Bright cherry red in colour with purple tints. On the nose aromas of fresh red plums and cherries are followed by notes of balsamic and a floral hint. Balanced on the palate with soft, juicy tannins and plenty of ripe red and black fruit character with a touch of sweet spice to finish.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2011) - 87 pts

Wine Advocate #201 Jun 2012 - Robert Parker - his organically farmed vineyard has produced an amazing value, the 2011 Molino Loco. The good news is that 8,000 cases are imported by Eric Solomon. Unusually for a Spanish wine, it is finished with a screw cap, but it is a wonderfully soft, delicious, well-made blend of 80% Monastrell (Mourvedre) and 20% Syrah. A deep plum color is followed by a fruit-filled wine with low tannin and a silky, plump texture. As the old time-honored wine expression goes, ?if it tastes good, it must be good.? This delicious 2011 is priced as wines were when I was in college in the late 1960s. Drink it over the next year.
