Wine tasting notes

The wine shows an attractive lemony yellow-green colour with a complex nose of citrus, peach, tropical fruit and mineral tones. The palate is long and full with delicate wooding. Beautifully refined and elegant.

Nov 2015 - Neal Martin - The 2014 Chardonnay is matured 40% in barrel (20% of which is new) and the rest in stainless steel. It has a slightly muted nose compared to the more outgoing recent releases of Sauvignon Blanc from Vergelegen, gradually revealing pineapple and citrus scents, just a hint of honeydew melon. The palate is quite intense on the entry with bitter lemon infusing the tropical fruit - pineapple, guava and spice, leading to an energetic finish that just cuts away a little short. Drink over the next 3-5 years.

May/June '15. By Stephen Tanzer. - Pale-medium yellow. The perfumed aromas and flavors of apricot, nectarine, orange and nutmeg show a wild leesy character. Lovely intensity and depth to the wine's sweet fruit, but this Chardonnay is ultimately dry and classic. This bottling is now made entirely from owned fruit and the non-virused vines now average just over ten years of age.

John Platter (2014)4 stars

Only part oaked to showcase the fruit flavours, 13's orange/lemon & buttered toast styling puts it back on track after 2012. Elegant, with a lifting freshness.

Around 40% of this appealing Chardonnay is tank fermented to preserve its fruit flavours of melon and pear. The oak is deftly integrated by André van Rensburg, supported by refreshing acidity and adding to the mouthfeel and balance. Drink: 2015-18

Vinification Notes

This is the second year that entirely Estate-grown grapes have been used in the making of the Premium Chardonnay. The vineyards were cropped at 6.5 tons/ha. Half the grapes were barrel fermented and the other half in tanks. Selections were made in early November 2013 before bottling in December. Harvesting for Chardonnay started on 8 February and finished on 7 March 2013. Grapes were whole-bunch pressed and not given any skin contact. The juice, slightly clarified, was racked into 20% new French oak barrels (Francois Frère, Dargaud & Jaegle, Gillet & Mercurey) and 80% second, third and fourth fill barrels for alcoholic fermentation. The Lower Schaapenberg and a portion of the Rooiland grapes were tank fermented because of their delicate structures. The remainder was fermented in barrel, using a combination of cultured yeasts and feral fermentations. The young wine was matured for 8 months on the lees in both tank and barrel before bottling on 4 December 2013.
