Wine tasting notes

Attractive light green colour. Nose shows delicate citrus, white flowers, honey and spice. The wine is finely focused, complex and well balanced with a crisp acidity

Winery information

Vergelegen

Nestled between the Helderberg & Hottentots Mountains in Stellenbosch, Vergelegen is one of South Africa's premiere wine producers. The estate has a storied history dating back to its establishment in 1700 by Governor Willem Adriaan van der Stel. Today Vergelegen is owned and operated by Anglo American PLC , one of the world's largest global mining groups who have nurtured and developed it into a world-class wine estate.Vergelegen, meaning "situated far away", is now coming into its own as a showpiece of South Africa's recent wine renaissance. Winemaker, Andre Van Rensburg, has won numerous awards for the Vergelegen wines including the Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Trophy in 2001 and 2003. Voted New World Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast magazine in the USA in 2005, Vergelegen has also been nominated the 'Best South African Winery' by the readers of Wine Magazine for five successive years from 2004 to 2008. In the making of wine a simple philosophy is followed. There must be harmony between the old and the new. Simplicity is combined with rigorous selection and infinite attention to detail and craftsmanship in the holistic pursuit of wines that are an expression of terroir. Following two decades of vineyard development and viticulture refinements, the team have been able to identify the individual vineyards and varietals that best express this great estate.

Vinification notes

The grapes were picked on 13 and 20 February 2017. No crushing or de-stemming, but the grapes were rather whole bunch pressed for best quality juice. Fermentation took place in 225 litre French oak barrels. The wine was matured in barrel for eight months with regular lees stirrings.
