Wine tasting notes

Attractive Riesling aromas of citrus zest and honeysuckle are accompanied by intense Noble Botrytis characters of apricot, mango and dried fruits. The palate is characteristically mouthfilling with a seductive orange blossom and sweet spice core balanced by a fine backbone of cleansing acidity. This wine exhibits superb concentration with great length and persistence of flavour.

Villa Maria

It is not easy to tell your Dad that you are quitting a career in carpentry to try your hand at making wine. But in 1961, at the age of 21, that's exactly what Sir George Fistonich did. He leased five acres of land from his father, planted one acre with grapes and started making wine under the name 'Villa Maria' which he chose because his friends thought it sounded European. Since those first cuttings took hold in the soil out in Mangere, near Auckland, Sir George has been determined to be at.. read more

eRobertParker.com #209 Oct 2013 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown - Medium straw-gold in color, the 2011 Reserve Noble Semillon Botrytis Selection is intensely scented of acacia honey, orange marmalade and candied lemon peel with nuances of musk perfume and balsamic. Very sweet, concentrated and rich in the mouth, the concentrated flavor layers are offset by vibrant acidity before finishing with great length. Drink it now to 2018+.

James Suckling (2012)93 pts

This oozes unctuous candied stone fruits with dried citrus rind, peach melba and apricot danish. The palate offers smooth-flowing, sweet poached peach and dried-apricot flavors with soft cinnamon spice, toffee and creamy brûlée custard to close. Drink now.

Michael Cooper (2011)5 stars

One of New Zealand's top sweet wines on the show circuit. It is typically stunningly perfumed, weighty and oily, with intense, very sweet honey/citrus flavours and a lush, long finish. The grapes are grown mainly in the Fletcher Vineyard, in the centre of Marlborough's Wairau Plains, where trees create a 'humidity crib' around the vines and sprinklers along the vines' fruit zone create ideal conditions for the spread of noble rot. TThe 2011 vintage (5*) is gorgeous. Grown in the Fletcher Vineyard and handled without oak, it is ravishingly scented, with abundant sweetness (188 grams/litre of residual sugar) and very rich, peachy, honeyed flavours. Drink now onwards.

Miscellaneous (2011)

Air NZ WIne Awards 2012 - Pure Gold - Intense, vibrant and gratifying, this is packed with lovely yellow peach, mango, citrus and creamy oak characters. It’s full, textured with a very long finish.

Vinification Notes

Located on the central valley floor of the Wairau Valley, the Fletcher Vineyard is characterised by free-draining alluvial soils. Pruned to balance the site naturally it exhibits low vigour where the fruit is encouraged to develop botrytis early. With careful late season management the fruit is harvested after the botrytis has drawn much of the berries’ moisture, concentrating sugars, acids and flavours.
