Wine tasting notes

Powerful aromas of lime and passionfruit combine with underlying green capsicum and subtle flinty notes. The palate is full and rich exploding with blackcurrant leaf, grapefruit and complex mineral characters. The intense fruit notes are complemented by a finely woven acidity, creating a long lingering finish.

Paradoxically, the 2017 Single Vineyard Southern Clays Sauvignon Blanc is the most restrained and the most powerful of the 2017 Sauvignon Blancs from Villa Maria. Subtle herbal hints add interest to notes of stone fruit, fig and passion fruit, while there's a creaminess to the mid-palate that imparts an extra layer of depth to this medium-bodied wine. It's mouth-filling and ripe, with a long, subtle finish.

Vinification Notes

The Maxwell Vineyard is situated in the exceptional Southern Clays area, nestled in the gentle north facing foothills of the Ben Morven Valley in Marlborough. The vineyard's clay soils, coupled with a strong pursuit of vine health and balance, have resulted in fruit of outstanding quality. The juice received a long and cool fermentation to retain the fruit's intense varietal characters. The wine was aged on yeast lees for four months to enhance palate texture and complexity before bottling.
