Vina Cobos

Viña Cobos is Californian “Steve Jobs of the Wine World” Paul Hobb's partnership in Argentina, founded in 1997 with Andrea Marchiori and Luis Barraud and is the result of a shared dream. Hobbs arrived in Argentina in the 1980's. Falling in love with the country, he partnered with Nicolas Catena at Bodega Catena Zapata and here, recognising the potential of Mendoza's old vines, decided to invest in his own winery. The inaugural vintage in 1999 received the highest score to date for a Argentinian wine upon release, and the wines have continued to garner outstanding plaudits ever since. The focus has been on terroir and low yields since inception, and the sites in Luján de Cuyo and the Uco Valley have been identified for the cultivation of grapes which uniquely express their origins.
The 45 hectare Marchiori Estate in Perdriel in Luján de Cuyo is the original estate that Paul fell in love with and is where the winery is situated. It is planted with old Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vines, with some younger Petit Verdot, Merlot and Chardonnay at 995 metres on deep soils ranging from loamy-clay to loamy-sand with layers of pebbles and rounded stones.
Touza Vineyard in Las Compuertas has just 3 hectares of Malbec on rocky and sandy soils that have been managed by the Touza family for three generations. This is one of the highest wine-growing regions in the Luján de Cuyo region with an average altitude of 1,050 metres.
The 17 hectare Chañares Estate in Tunuyán's Los Arboles region of the Uco Valley is planted at over 1,180 metres above sea level with Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon on poor, free-draining soils.
Zingaretti Vineyard in Turpungato, the northernmost subregion of the Uco Valley, has 17 hectares planted at 1,150 metres with some very old Malbec vines, over 80 years old, as well as some old-vine Chardonnay on silty-sand soils.
The Rebon Estate in La Consulta in the southern Uco Valley, has 17 hectares under vine entirely with Malbec at an average altitude of 1,015 metres on well-drained rocky soils.
The just over 4 hectare Los Arbolitas Vineyard in the Los Chacayes GI subregion of Tunuyán in the Uco Valley, is planted with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir at 1,100 metres on silty-sandy soils with calcium carbonate cementation.
Several ranges of wines are produced. Felino are pure varietal wines with distinct fruit profiles. Bramare are a premium monovarietal single vineyard range. Cocodrilo is a red Bordeaux style blend, and Cobos are their flagship wines which show the maximum expression of Malbec from different vineyard sites. The wines of Viña Cobos are complex, concentrated and polished, each with their own unique personality.
