Wine tasting notes

This wine is deep ruby red in colour, with violet hues. There are intense notes of ripe red and black fruits, cherries in syrup, blackcurrants and a stewed fruit character. Notes of dairy, a hint of nutmeg, rich toast and a touch of tobacco intermingle with its fruity character. The palate is well-balanced with round tannins, good structure and a long, elegant finish

April 2017 - Luis Gutierrez - The 2014 Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon showed harmonious and with some restrain, quite classical and with varietal characteristics. The palate is consistent, medium-bodied with noticeable tannins, in need of food. 600,000 bottles produced.

Bright ruby-red. Smoke-accented cherry and red currant on the nose, plus a hint of cedary oak in the background. Juicy and focused on the palate, showing good lift to the bitter cherry and red berry flavors, which become spicier with air. Turns sweeter on the finish, which hangs on with good tenacity and a whisper of dusty tannins. -- Josh Raynolds

Tasted Sept 2016 - Ripe, pure cassis fruit with a fresh peppery capsicum edge to it. Chocolate texture and flavour on the palate. Rounded, generous and caressing but could do with a little more freshness. The balance is good as the alcohol does not stick out as it does on some of these big Chilean reds. Tannins are fine-grained, giving an elegant finish. Still very young. (JH)

The flavors of red currant and dried cherry stretch out nicely, with notes of sage and cream. Dried savory accents linger on the finish, with white pepper hints. Drink now through 2019.

James Suckling (2014)92 pts

A beautiful and balanced wine with blackcurrant and sweet tobacco character. Medium to full body. Stone and currant. Rose petal. Always excellent. Drink now.

Prickly, cool aromas of herbal berry fruits and eucalyptus open this wine. It's dense, tannic and chewy, with dark black-fruit flavors along with herbal notes and tobacco. A meaty, almost salty finish is tannic as nails, so let this breathe as much as possible before drinking.

Vinification Notes

The grapes were cold soaked at 10°C for five days to extract aroma and colour. The grapes were then fermented in stainless steel tanks for 12 days and kept on their skins to give structure and colour. After malolactic fermentation, 55% of the final blend was aged in French oak barrels (1st, 2nd, and 3rd use) for 12 months to add complexity and roundness to the wine.
