Wine Advocate #213 June 2014. Reviewer : Luis Gutierrez - The 2011 Alpha Carmenere is a ripe, peppery rendition of the grape with aromas of black pepper and paprika intermixed with bright black fruit and a medium-bodied palate with enough acidity but could do with a little more freshness. Drink now-2015. (2012)15.5 pts

Tasted Dec 2014 - Glowing crimson. Pungent eucalyptus and burnt plum. A juicy pop of very ripe fruit to start, then a bit of bitterness, like the aftertaste of dark-roast coffee grounds, insists on the finish, and there is a kick of alcohol. One could be beguiled by the lashings of sweetness, but the finish is uncomfortable and uncoordinated. (TC)

Nov 30, 2014 - Green herb and red fruit flavors mix easily in this medium-bodied red. Offers a firm structure, with a finish fringed by cocoa powder and creamy notes.

James Suckling (2011)91 pts

A red with walnut shell and berry character. Hints of cloves and other spices too. Full-bodied, fruity and delicious plus a fresh finish. A pure carmenere that shows focus. Drink now.

Feb '14 - Bright purple. Pungent black and blue fruits on the nose and palate, with notes of black tea and vanilla adding complexity. Fleshy and open-knit, finishing with strong punch, a hint of warmth and smooth, slow-building tannins.

Earthy, baked aromas of ripe berry, raisin and leather come with a tobacco note. This is nice given the cold weather that drove the 2011 vintage. Round tannins and overall balance provide bedding for spicy flavors of blackberry, herbal notes, licorice and oak. — M.S. (3/1/2014)

"Year's Best" - Deep and live ruby red color. The wine has a very elegant and evident Carmenère typicity, showing lovely black pepper aromas with hints of red berries, chocolate, a bit of vanilla and black plums. In the mouth is distinctively smooth, with rounded and soft tannins. Long finish. The oak is beautifully integrated and balanced.

Vinification Notes

The grapes come from our El Arcángel Marchigüe estate, located at the western end of Colchagua valley, where, 18 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, the relatively cool climate allows this late-ripening variety to mature slowly and smoothly and reach full ripeness. Clay soils give strength and power to the wine. After fermentation, the wine is moved to French oak barrels where it is aged for 12 months.
