Round, smooth, smart, this Chilean Merlot is a good everyday wine for lovers of St Emilion wines. It is a perfect partner for roast lamb, roast chicken and steak, and works with most meats, including game. It is great with stew and with pasta dishes with meat or mushroom based sauces. Vegetarians can make a meal of it with a huge dish of roast vegetables, and can also enjoy it with a varied cheese board (though perhaps not blue cheeses). Carnivores take note that it is a great match for all kinds of charcuterie. It can take some spice and some smoke, though it isn't too fond of salt or cream. It can be enjoyed on its own or as a party wine.

Description

Jancis Robinson - 16 Points

Very ripe fruit aromas, almost tropical despite the coastal location. Spicy, rich and bold, with just enough acidity to balance the buttery, honeyed fruit. It has reasonable acidity but it does not strike me as a true ‘cool-climate’ Chardonnay, as if they had done everything to reduce the influence of the cooler location. Lots of spice on the finish and a touch of sweetness. A bit hefty. -Julia Harding MW

Wine tasting notes

This wine is bright golden, yellow in colour. The intense, complex nose offers tropical fruit aromas such as pineapple, banana and ripe mango, while pleasing notes of peaches and pears round out the fruity profile. The coastal climate is very much present in the subtle notes of grapefruit and white asparagus. The French oak also complements the aromatic profile with elegant and well-integrated toasted notes that recall hazelnut and vanilla. Perfectly balanced acidity results in a very fresh wine that also has generous volume.

Dec 2015 - Luis Gutierrez - Montes' 2014 Alpha Chardonnay is the classical Casablanca Chardonnay with aromas of nuts, smoke and pear drops; it is tropical, ripe and easily recognizable. The palate shows some tropical flavors too, limited acidity and wood flavors in the finish.

Tasted July '15 - Restrained but rather sophisticated nose. Jewelly and very very slightly sweet nose. Wonderful transparent texture. Dry finish after lots of drive. No one could be disappointed with this. Long and it delivers mainly on the end rather than the beginning of the tasting experience à la bourguignonne. Impressive.

Nov 15, 2014 - Lively and fruity, with flavors of dried peach, kumquat and blood orange. Fresh midpalate, with a lingering finish of flan and roasted pineapple. Distinctive. Drink now through 2017.

A rich and flavorful chardonnay with hints of vanilla and sliced cooked apple. Full body, plenty of fruit and hints of toasted oak. Only about 40% new oak and 20% malo - this gives it a fascinating brightness and richness. Better 2016.

The nose hints at green aromas of cool-climate fruits underneath heavy oak. This feels linear on the palate, while flavors of clove, pyrazine and tart apple lead to a slightly oaky finish. — M.S. (12/31/2014)

Big honkin’ chardonnay with attractive aromas of green apples and toasty oak. Full-bodied richness with a smoky seductive weave throughout. This wine is made from Chardonnay grapes grown in the cool climate region of Chile's Casablanca Valley that's temperature-moderated by the ocean. Perfect for roast chicken.

Vinification Notes

The grapes were hand picked during the early hours of the morning to ensure they reached the cellar at a cool temperature. The Chardonnay was processed using three different techniques: whole-cluster pressed, destemmed and pressed, and destemmed and cold macerated for a few hours. Fermentation took place in tank for 25 days at temperatures of 13°C – 14°C. 35% of the final blend was fermented in barrels with differing degrees of toast. 25% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation, to obtain smoother wines with greater aromatic complexity.
