Winery information

Vina Montes

A winery like no other, Montes has driven Chile?s ultra-premium wine image from the outset. Since 1988 founder Aurelio Montes and his partners have captivated us with wines of the highest quality and singular design, setting a global standard to follow. Montes Winery brings Chile?s most unique vineyard sites to life capturing their expression through disciplined winemaking, modern technology, and meticulous attention to detail.A true vanguard of Chilean winemaking, Aurelio Montes? greatest strengths lie in a profound understanding of terroir and a willingness to push boundaries in a lifelong pursuit of quality. One of the first to realize the untapped potential of Apalta, Montes pioneered high altitude planting before it was the norm. Dubbed ?Montes? folly? when he first planted Syrah on steep hillside slopes, he turned the resulting wine into a global icon and has never looked back. An equally accomplished vine grower and winemaker, Montes has won critical acclaim worldwide for his exuberant wines. A father of five, Montes is an avid pilot, sailor and equestrian.

Food matching

An excellent aperitif and party wine, Chilean Sauvignon Blancs such as this are not only versatile but, like Sauvignon Blancs in general, are also a gift when it comes to matching otherwise challenging ingredients such as asparagus and smoked foods. This wine can stand up to vinegar, and so is excellent with all kinds of salads, but it can also take the heat, making it a good match for lighter Thai dishes. You can't go wrong pairing it with fish and shellfish, but avoid creamy sauces and anything too salty.

Expert reviews

Wine Advocate/Robert Parker (2010) - 89 pts

Wine Advocate # 199. Feb 2012. Reviewer : Jay Miller. The 2010 Sauvignon Blanc Limited Selection was also fermented and raised in stainless steel. Made from Leyda fruit, it was produced from significantly lower yields than the Classic Series cuvee which may account for its impressive concentration and laser-like focus. Notions of thyme, stony minerals, spring flowers, and gooseberry lead to a racy, lively, lengthy Sauvignon. It is an outstanding value meant for drinking over the next 12-18 months.Aurelio Montes has a well-earned reputation as one of Chile?s foremost vignerons. The Montes wines offer great value at the lower end of the spectrum and set the bar for what can be achieved in Chile at the higher end.

Wine Spectator (2014) - 89 pts

April 2015 - Exuberantly fruity, with lively flavors of melon, apricot and tropical fruits, balanced by lemongrass and savory herbal notes. The clean finish shows plenty of fresh acidity.

Wine Enthusiast (2011) - 88 pts

Nice on the nose, with tropical aromas, ocean-based saline and mild green-fruit notes. Feels crisp and cleansing, with tangy flavors of lemon, green apple and underripe pineapple. Lime and green flavors of tarragon and grass drive the finish. — M.S. (6/1/2012)

Decanter (2011) - 3 pts

Restrained mineral, tropical fruit, mandarin, lemon and coriander nose. Crunchy, tangy style with fresh acidity and flinty minerality. Multi-dimensional and long.

Vinification notes

Grapes were cold soaked at 10°C for 10 hours to extract aromas and then fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks between 11-12°C for approximately 21 days. The wine was kept in contact with its lees to add roundness to the palate.
